Thanks for your reply to my query. Yes, I had found the 1880 census where P.C.'s name was crossed out. The census listing was my very first indication of when she may have died.
I believe the Puss Cooper you mentioned in the 1880 census was the daughter of P.C. and John W. Cooper Jr. I'm also pretty certain that the aunt that Puss was listed with was the sister of John Jr's mother. I have a cousin who says her grandmother's name was Puss Victoria Cooper. (I personally think that Puss was probably a pet name given to the baby until she was named and it stuck with her.)
Anyway, I shall follow up on the leads you've given me and I certainly appreciate your help.
