Missing 1850 Census Data in Natchez, Adams County, MS
Maybe someone can help me with this:
I have been researching James and Ellen O'Neill in Natchez, and have found them listed in all the cenus data with the exception of the 1850 one. There seems to be no listing of the family. I have gone over it house by house through 38 pages, and find no one, even with misspelled names, that could be his family. This search is through Ancestry.com and their census records. However in the following search, I found a possible explanation as to why I could not find him:
1850 Census Index: Adams County, MISSISSIPPI,Copyright 1988 by S-K Publications. All rights reserved.
Page numbers are stamped in upper right corners of the microfilmed pages.
Every other page is unnumbered. The "A" page is always the numbered page,
and the "B" page is the unnumbered page following it on the film (it was
the backside of the paper that was microfilmed).
O'NEILL 20B
So his family must have been on the backside of the paper that was microfilmed and Ancestry.com failed to record that page.
Am I right about this? Or am I grasping at straws? Are there any other researchers having this problem?
James O'Neill is listed in the 1850 Federal Census of Slave Owners of Natchez (see below), so I know he was living in Natchez at the time.
In 1850 James O'Neill owned 7 slaves
