I am trying to piece together my Gorey (Gory) tree and I am stuck. I have copies of our Gorey family Bible that starts with Albert Galington Gorey born 1838 and died 1905. He married Maryann Eliza Allbritton in 1866 in Pontotoc Co., Ms. They had several children and one that was listed in the family Bible was my great grandfather, John Albert Gory born May 13, 1872. John Albert was married to Lucilla Long. I also know that John Albert is responsible for changing the spelling of our last name from Gorey to Gory. I was told this by our oldest living relative (Dad's brother who is 84). He said that he was told that John Albert changed the spelling due to his lack of an education. I am also trying to find the connection Albert G. had to a John Thaddeus Gorey who was born in either 1812 or 1821 in Newberry District, S.C. and died in 1916 in Poplar Springs, Ms. He was married to Belinda Sims in 1847 in S.C.. They traveled by covered wagon to Pontotoc Co., Ms shortly after their marriage. He was an overseer on a Plantation in Pontotoc. I have a copy of his obit and it stated that he was orphaned at the age of 10. The obit also stated that he had 8 daughters and 1 son, John Sims Gorey and at the time of his death he was the oldest living person in Tupelo, Ms. I found in the 1869 Ms. census that Albert G. was living in the household with John T and his family. I also have copies from the Poplar Springs Baptist Church minutes that list all of the above mentioned as members and John T. was also an Elder at the church.. I believe that Albert G. and John T. were maybe cousins and that Albert G. was the father of John Albert, my ggrandfather. Does anyone have any information that could possibly help me put the pieces of my puzzle together? And maybe someone knows who John T. lived with after he was orphaned at 10 yrs. old.
