Dear Linda,

Thank you so much for the response. Yes these are the people that I am looking for. Ed Jones and Emma Jones are the parents of Josephine Jones. She married Sam Jones around the late 1890's and had the girls you saw in the census. Bertha, the first born, was my grandmother on my father's side. I was excited about the information you provided, especially for the 1930's census because I was told that Josephine had died after having her daughter Mary. I thought it was in the 1920's, so I stopped looking for Sam and her after 1920's. After she died he married another woman and my aunt has told me he kicked his daughters out of the house and moved her childred in. The house and land that Sam and Josephine lived on was owned by Ed Jones who must have given some to Sam before his Josephine died. To this day, my aunt and her brothers and sisters are still bitter about issues as to who owns the land.

As far as Sam is concerned, he was the last child born to a Sam and Ann Jones of Newton County. They had a lot of children and died somewhere in the 1890's. As you know, the information for the 1890's is practically nonexistant, so I don't know when or where they died. One thing that I do know is that they had a daughter nicknamed Sis, but whose real name is Mary. Years ago I found her married to a Charlie Watkins, but I didn't know then how to exam the census for other information. I always wanted to know where he lived after his parents died, and it shows that he lived with his sister and her husband. My Aunt talked about how when she was little, they didn't like the Watkins, so now I understand why. It was Sam's nieces and nephews; Sam who she told me was the cause of Josephine's, his first wife's death.

Two dilema's I have now is one: Ed Jones is shown on the 1900 census as being married to a Vina Kirby. This is the name my Aunt remembers, but the 1910 and consequent censuses show an Emma Jones as his wife with the same children. Did Ed Jones remarry? Did Vina Kirby die? I have Ed and Vina's marriage record, but haven't found a record for an Emma.

The second dilemna is Sam and Ann Jones. Where are they buried and his there death records for them. Sam was supposely from Africa. He was also owned by two men. One was name Oscar Jones, which I do not find in Newton County. The other man was a Clem Dennison. This slave owners might have lived in Alabama, because this is where Sam says he came from. I know that Alabama and Mississippi use to be one state, so if you or anyone knows anything about these names, it could help a lot.
