While I'm not sure if this would help, I thought I would pass it on. You should check with the Arkansas health department (website is http://www.healthyarkansas.com/faq/faq_birth_cert.html) for a death certificate for this man. This should give the names of parents if known by the informant. In addition (though I'm not sure how) you might be able to get a copy of his Social Security number application which would also give the parents' names.
Post a similar query at the Quitman County, MS board if you have not already done so.
