My sources on the Ward family are the books (2 vols) BARRETT by Elise M. Shepherd in the MS Dept of Archives & History and the book LEAKE COUNTY HISTORY by M & L Spence, "Ward Family" pp 331/332/333 by Rev. Adin Ward. Also, censuses 1850, 1860, etc.
In Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Minutes on film at the Baptist Historical Commission library at Clinton, MS, one finds evidence that William J. and Prudence P. Ward had a daughter named Sarah Ann. Possibly she is the one who married W. Fortenberry (on 1850 and 1860 census, Neshoba Co, MS). I am looking for a record of that marriage if it exists. We know that Neshoba marriage records were lost in a fire prior to 1877/78 so no hope there. Nor have I seen a record in Leake Co for a Sarah A. to W. Fortenberry. When Rev. Adin Ward wrote on p. 332 in Leake Co History that W.J. and Prudence's No. 6 child, "Sarah (Sallie) Ward married Ike Fortenberry. She was his second wife.", he was speaking of Pru & George W. Barrett's dau. Sarah, for it is she who married Ike Fortenberry as his 2nd wife. Ike's 1st wife, Emily Sistrunk died leaving several children; Ike and Sarah had some chn also. W.J. and Prudence P. had another dau., name not known by me, born between Sarah Ann and William Artemas who married prior to 1850 census. Possibly she was Elizabeth but that is a guess by me.
If you have evidence of a marriage for Sarah Ann Ward born 1827 and married abt 1845 please let me know. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.
