Pickens Alfred “Pick” Noble Jr., 66, died May 23, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Aug. 14, 1942, to the late Pickens A. Noble Sr. and Dorothy Bell Noble. His family moved from Greenville to Tupelo in 1944. He attended Tupelo City Schools, graduating in 1961, where he lettered in football and baseball at THS. He attended Itawamba Junior College on a football scholarship and lettered in football and baseball. He and teammate Donnie Harris were to have played in the Junior College All-American game in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but the game was cancelled that year due to the death of the organizer. He transferred to his beloved Mississippi State University in 1963 and graduated in 1966 with a B.S. Degree. While at State, he was a part of the MSU Football network serving as a spotter for the legendary Jack Cristil for 18 years. While at State, he also wrote a sports column for the student newspaper, The Reflector. He was Tupelo’s first Sports Director for the Park and Recreation Department. In 1967, he got into the food industry and spent the rest of his career there and in the insurance industry there until 2006. He was owner/operator of Custom Cooking, aka Pick’s BBQ. At his death, he was serving as a substitute teacher in the Tupelo Public Schools. He was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church serving in the Eucharistic ministry, lector, usher and member of the parish council. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and served his local council as recorder, Deputy Grand Knight and as Trustee. On the State level, he was four times convention chairman for K of C hosted in Tupelo. He enjoyed life, merriment and the love and fellowship of his family and many friends.
Mass was aid at St. James Catholic Church with Father burial in Tupelo Memorial Park. Holland Harris Funeral Directors was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors included his wife, Carolyn Montgomery Noble of Tupelo; two daughters, Becky Weatherford and Stephanie Noble, both of Tupelo; his father-in-law, Earnest Montgomery of S.C.; his sister-in-law, Lynn Dorris (David) of Maryville, Tenn.; his brother-in-law, Gary Montgomery (Michele) of Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren.
He is preceded by his parents; granddaughter, Bailey Elizabeth; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
