Walter Richard Hubbard, 67, died April 16, 2009, in London, Ontario, Canada, where he had temporarily resided the last three years. He was born June 20, 1941, in the Bissell community of Lee County to John Arthur and Cleo Estelle Phillips Hubbard. He lived here as a youth and graduated from South High School in Springfield, Ohio. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the infantry in Korea between 1959-1962. After his active service, he served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as a master sergeant. He received his formal education at Troy State University, earning a B.A. degree in accounting. He later received his Master of Divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Ind. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 30 years as an auditor. He was a minister for many years in the Christian church, formerly serving as associate pastor of Central Christian Church in Memphis and pastor of Clayton Presbyterian Church in Clayton, Ind., Sherwood Christian Church in Greencastle, Ind., and First Church of Christ (Disciples) of London, Ontario. At his death he was the interim pastor of Tillsonburg United Church of Canada in Tillsonburg, Ontario. He served as co-director of the Indianapolis CROP Walk and president of Mill Creek Optimist Club. He lived in Memphis for 15 years and later in Birmingham and Indianapolis. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Christian Church of Tennessee. He enjoyed studying biblical archaeology, golf, the outdoors, especially camping, and life to the fullest. Services were at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with burial in the Hubbard Family Plot at White Zion Cemetery in Pontotoc County. Survivors included his wife, the Rev. Catherine “Cathy” Colton Hubbard of Memphis; his four children, Dennis, Gary, Cassandra and Greg; five grandchildren; one brother, John Robert Hubbard (Sylvia) of Hattiesburg; two aunts, Edna Wheeler (Billy Fred) of Verona and Kate Hubbard Witcher of Bissell; one uncle, Wallace Phillips (Sue) of Winfield, Ala.; one niece and one nephew; and a host of cousins.
