Itawamba Settlers, summer 1999, pages 69-72 A HISTORY OF THE WALTON CEMETERY By Mack Riley People from all over Northeast Mississippi will be visiting the Walton Cemetery on Sunday, August 8. They will come to lay wreaths and bouquets of flowers on the graves of loved ones. It will be the annual Memorial Day for this cemetery begun more than one and a half centuries ago as a Sheffield family burial ground. Almost everyone in the surrounding areas of Dorsey, Peppertown and Mantachie has ancestors buried in the Walton Cemetery. It is located along a gently sloping hillside at the intersection of Christian and Walton Cemetery Roads northwest of Peppertown. The memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. under a tent on the grounds. Wendell Riley Moore is in charge of a perpetual care fund for the cemetery. ‘The fund was started a few years ago out of fear that the old cemetery might not be kept up in a generation or so. Moore said it is virtually filled up now with about 1300 graves. In the early days, people of the surrounding community came with hoes and rakes to clean around graves and form mounds of loose earth to identify them when there were no markers. It was generally called graveyard working day. At one time this cemetery was the only public burial ground in a wide area. It was actually begun on the farm of John Sheffield, the grandson of Everett and Rebecca Sheffield field. Everett’s father, Adam Sheffield, had migrated from Moore County, North Carolina, via Georgia to Benton County, Alabama, where both Everett and his son, John, were born. Everett and his family then moved to Itawamba County. John Sheffield died April 23, 1862, a victim of the Civil War and one of the first interred in the cemetery. The original Sheffield burial ground became known as the Walton graveyard during the Civil War. It had become part of the William Walton homestead. William and his brother, Alexander, had migrated from central Tennessee and obtained the former Sheffield place in 1850. It is believed that the first person buried here was 12-year old Lydia Sheffield in 1844. She was the daughter of Adam Sheffield who had moved here the year before from Alabama. Adam and Tulley Fendley went into business as wheelwrights, making chairs, springs, wheels and reels in their workshop located on the original Fulton-Pontotoc Road, now the site of the intersection of Riley and Walton Cemetery Roads. The oldest readable tombstones are of Everett and Susannah Sheffield, both dated 1790-1860, Angelica Tatum, wife of Peter Wynn Stovall, March 9, 1828, to February 27, 1861 and John Sheffield, April 26, 1837, to April 23, 1862. The exact dates of death for Everett and Susannah Sheffield are not known. The gravestone for them was erected during the 1980’s reflecting dates from family legend. Elvina Walton, age 30, single, born in South Carolina and died of a fever in June, 1850, is believed to have been the first Walton to be interred here before it became known as the Walton family 69 grounds. This grave, like most of them before the Civil War and many afterwards, has no markers of any kind to identify it. Out in the woods about a mile away is another old cemetery with some two dozen graves, the oldest marker being for James Files who was born in 1769 and buried here in 1842. This cemetery has been abandoned for more than half a century. Dozens of such old cemeteries have been forsaken throughout the county, thus the concern for the future of the Walton Cemetery. Family legends tell of a rather enigmatic beginning of the Walton Cemetery. The often told story is one of a mysterious grave appearing beside the road that led to the William Walton home, the house being set back quite a distance off the Old Sims Road, now Christian Road. The fresh mound of dirt was identical to graveyard burials in those days with a wood headboard, but no one knew whether or not it was actually the grave of a human being. Thereafter, however, according to the legend, this hillside became known as a burial ground and began to receive the interments of the community. Another legend extant is that a “displaced” and unidentified soldier was passing through, became ill, died and it was he who was the first to be buried in what came to be known as the cemetery. No marker exists to substantiate this particular story. However, there are five Civil War markers in the cemetery that do identify buried victims of the great conflict between the states. During the yellow fever epidemic of 1878, an entire family was wiped out. The children were first to succumb and they were hastily buried. Later, in the same year, the parents fell victim to the fever during a rainy season. The road to the cemetery was so muddy that the corpses had to be carried to the cemetery in an oxcart drawn by two large bullocks. It is said that none of the graves were ever marked by anything other than a transient mound of earth. As a result, the location of these graves, like many others, has long been lost among the ancient cedars in the old section. In 1890, a cypress-shingled pavilion was built at the top of the hill and it was soon surrounded by graves. Henry Brantley Riley and William “Billy” Walton, operator of the ferry at West Fulton and Riley’s father-in-law, brought a bell from Tupelo and mounted it on a post next to the pavilion. This cast iron bell became the symbol of the graveyard for nearly three-quarters of a century thereafter. It was tolled to announce funerals and to call together people of the community to help dig graves. The second Saturday in August was chosen as the graveyard working day. It became known as Decoration Day when the pavilion was built to replace a brush arbor used by graveyard workers as shelter from the hot sun or rain. The structure began to be used as a shelter for memorial services and funerals. Some old-timers continued the tradition of bringing hoes and rakes the day before the memorial service to clean around the graves of departed relatives. On April 8, 1931, James Alexander, Sr., and Fannie Sheffield Walton deeded an additional 2 and one-half acres to the cemetery. It is believed that this Walton’s father was the original benefactor of land surrounding the family plot bearing the Walton name. By 1950 the cemetery covered much of the rise and slope of the 70 hill behind the faintly whitewashed, although weather-beaten, clapboard building constructed in 1931. The chapel facing east had also an entrance on the south side where a narrow gravel road ran west on an incline past the cemetery, terminating at the old Walton domicile. Aging cedars near the top of this elevation surrounded it where the original gate was hinged. It was just beyond this entrance where the oldest tombstones were located. Mixed among these 19th Century stones were many unmarked graves with dates contemporaneous with the surrounding monuments. Expanding roots of some large cedars had pushed up and toppled more than one headstone. On a calm day, the cemetery bell could be heard for at least two miles as it was sounded on the morning before a funeral. The bell had traditionally called community volunteers to the yard to dig the grave for the deceased. The obsequies were usually held in the pavilion until the chapel was built. Mourners could sing farewell hymns being accompanied by an old upright piano housed on the premises. During the Great Depression, the chapel was used for many community meetings, even a beauty contest during the summer of 1932. Sometimes local residents, having heard the early morning bell of the Walton Chapel, although they knew not for whom it tolled, would attend the funeral in the afternoon certain that they would see old friends and acquaintances. Decoration Day also brought people together at the cemetery who had sometimes not seen each other for years. They cleaned raked and laid bouquets of flowers on the graves of departed relatives. At noon they shared picnic lunches of fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits with sorghum molasses and fresh butter packed in lard buckets. Colorful homemade paper flowers found their way among other floral wreaths and fresh bouquets throughout the old graveyard studded with headstones bearing the names of Barnetts, Beanes, Bennetts, Browns, Christians, Comers, Cooleys, Davises, Donald’s, Gillispies, Grays, Gregory’s, Greenes, Hankinses, Loagues, Lodens, Meltons, Moores, Murphy’s, Nanneys, Rileys, Sheffields, Simses, Smiths, Stovalls, Waltons, York’s and a host of others that reflected the residential make-up of the surrounding area. When a chapel replaced the pavilion in 1931, the second Sunday in August was created as Memorial Day. Even after the establishment of that day, people living in the area continued to bring hoes and rake the day before to clean around the graves of loved ones and decorate them with flowers. During the Great Depression particularly, flowers were hand-made mostly out of crepe paper and wire. Others were fashioned out of muscadine vines, cardboard and whatever was in bloom. During the 1950’s wreaths professionally made up with fresh flowers, usually gladioli, carnations and imported palm fronds, replaced the homemade bouquets and wreaths. With the wide use of plastic, the 1970’s saw a return to artificial flowers, often-Oriental imports of plastic and silk. Nevertheless, fresh flowers were always the choice for funerals. A committee was organized during the 1950’s to be responsible for taking care of the cemetery. As a result, the committee began collecting money to pay a custodian for that purpose. However, it became obvious that the old cemetery would soon run out of space. 71 On October 21, 1963, Inez and Ernest Christian gave additional land to the cemetery. By this time, the old cemetery chapel was so neglected, vandalized and dilapidated; it came to be viewed as an eyesore and possible danger to anyone so unfortunate to wander inside. It became a concern to members of the community to see the leaning embarrassment with broken windows and a hesitant tower with its silent bell. As a result, the old cemetery building was demolished in 1965 and the bell that had been mounted on the building was sold to the highest bidder for a mere $50, reportedly to help pay for a new fence. The owner of the bell, William Joseph Riley, resold the bell to John Hughes. Hughes, a Mooreville mail carrier mounted the bell on a post in front of his Tremont house where it has since languished in silence. To replace the old chapel, a small drab concrete block shelter was fabricated across the road on the donated piece of land. One funeral service was held in the cinder block building before it too was vandalized and its windows broken. The austere shelter that faced the hillside cemetery from across the road had itself disappeared by 1990. As a result, no building remained in which to hold memorial observations or funerals. Occasionally such services were held in the nearby New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, but that was discontinued a few years ago. Now these events take place at the cemetery in a tent. It became so difficult to collect enough money to pay a custodian; the trustees of the cemetery started a perpetual care fund. In addition to collecting money door to door and at the gate, fund-raising events and special collections have put more than $42,000 into an interest-bearing account in the Bank of Mississippi in Mantachie. However, that is not enough to sustain the fund. “We look forward to the day when the account has enough money in it that the interest will pay for the upkeep of the cemetery,” said Wendell Moore. Mr. Moore has been instrumental in generating the fund, writing to people and driving all over northeast •Mississippi collecting money for the perpetual trust fund. Wendell’s wife, Mildred, is currently involved in planning a fund-raising event on Saturday, August 28 to pay for a sign at the cemetery. Currently, there is nothing to identify the old graveyard. The occasion will be the Friendship Day Festival whose fund-raising activities this year will include music, an auction, arts and crafts booths, a quilt raffle, cake sale, pea shelling tournament, a hog calling contest and the presentation of the annual good citizen award. It will also be a homecoming for students of Friendship School, which was closed in 1959. The festival will take place on the former campus, now the Friendship Community Park, beginning at 9 a.m. The park is located one mile north of Peppertown on Highway 363. Descendants of and relatives of those buried in the Walton Cemetery who wish to participate in this event may bring items for the auction. Other donations may be made to the care fund via the Bank of Mississippi in Mantachie or Wendell Riley and Mildred Loden Moore, 3805 Walton Cemetery Road, Mantachie, MS 38855. The Moore’s may also be reached by telephone at (601) 282-7398. 72
