Truman "Jabo" Shields, 76, died Jan. 29, 2004, at the NMMC. A lifelong resident of Itawamba County, he was born Aug. 25, 1927, to Durell and Lola Collum Shields. He was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.
Services were at McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with burial in the Walton Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Pernie M. Shields of Fairview; a daughter, Janice Starkey and husband, Dan, of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; a son, Eddie Shields and wife, Evie, of Ocean Springs; four stepsons, J.W. Beasley of Fulton, Roy Beasley of Hamilton, Ala., Arnold Cleveland of Mantachie and David Cleveland of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Clifton Shields and wife, Agnes, of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Bryant Starkey, Megan Shields and Mary Shields; five stepgrandchildren, seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Frances Cockrell Shields and Odean Shields; his parents; and a brother, Dalton Shields.
