Yankees from Forrest Co

In December 1863 my gg-grandfather, David Wesley Shattles left Brooklyn, MS and traveled to Baton Rouge, LA to enlist in the Union Army (38th Mass. Infantry Volunteers). This man could not read nor write, but he left his family in Brooklyn and traveled to Baton Rouge to enlist.
I was wondering if he took this journey alone or did he go with someone?
Am looking for other Forrest Co, MS men who may have enlisted in the Union Army about that time. I have found a list of Perry Co, MS men who joined the Union Army with a Louisiana Regiment, but am seeking any other Forrest Co men who enlisted. If you have a Mississippi Yankee in your family that may have gone with David, I would like to know.
