Hello Elizabeth.

Retherford Lunsford is not part of my family line (to my knowledge) but he's of interest to me due to his proximity to my Lunsford family. My Lunsfords were from Lauderdale and Dyer Counties in Tennessee, Mississippi and Crittenden Counties in Arkansas, and connections to DeSoto County, Mississippi. I was raised in Crittenden County, so I have researched this family to some degree.

Retherford Lunsford was listed on the 1830 census of Mooney Township, Phillips County, Arkansas Territory. Augustine and James Lunsford were listed on the delinquent tax list of Mooney Township for the year 1826. Retherford Lunsford was listed for the tax lists of 1828, 1830, and 1832. His widow, Mrs. R. Lunsford, and the Lunsford Estate were listed for the years 1837, 1838, and 1839. Retherford was born 1790-1800 in Virginia (according to 1880 census of his son Nimrod) and died 1835 in Phillips County. His wife was Mary Tackett, born about 1808. They married about 1826. After the death of Retherford, his widow married John Gillen in Phillips County, 01-Aug-1836. John Gillen died 1860-1870.

Retherford Lunsford owned land adjoining that of William Tucker near Offut Landing and Island No. 66. His house was situated next to the Mississippi River. In 1839, Nimrod T. Lunsford received a land patent at Helena for 67 acres. The names Mahala Luntsford, John T. Luntsford, and James R. Luntsford were listed under remarks. (Were these his siblings? What happened to Mahala?)

Nimrod T. Lunsford was born about 1827 and married Margaret Walls in 1850. They had children Henry H., George, Lelia, Iris (married William Cox), and Ruth Alistine. Henry H. married Mary Powell in 1882 and had sons, Nimrod, Hardee, and Lafayette. Henry H. died 1924, his wife Mary died 1921, and son Nimrod N. died 1916 of Tuberculosis. All are buried at Maple Hill Cemetery.

This family appears to be closely related to the Lunsfords of Coahoma County. I find a Ruth Canida (Kennedy) listed next to Retherford in Phillips County, 1830, also in Coahoma County by 1850 with her son Thomas. She was born in NC. Is she related?

Any additional information on this family would be great.
