Dear Sharon: The following is a clipping of the obituary for Lewis S. Powell. There is no date but this shouldn't be too hard to find. I suspect it came from the Commercial Appeal (Memphis).
Lewis S. Powell, Prominent Planter Dies -- Funeral Service Held Yesterday
Helena, Ark. April 26. -- Lewis S. Powell, 55, planter of Helena and Powell, Miss., died last night at his home here after an illness of several months.
Mr. Powell was born at Powell, the son of the late John M. Powell and Ellis Smith Powell.
He operated extensive farming interests at Powell and also farmed the Long Lake Plantation, south of here. He was married in July 1903 to Miss Claudine Gordon, who survives him.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Walter L. Burroughs and Mrs. Hugh Ray, both of Helena and Miss Ellie Powell of Powell, a student at Southwestern, Memphis and three sons, Lewis Powell, Jr., Helena; John M. Powell, of Dallas, and Robert F. Powell, of Washington.
Funeral services were conducted from St. John's Episcopal Church this afternoon at 4 o'clock by the Rev. Frank Walters, rector. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
I have another little clipping from the paper which reads:
"Mrs. Louis Powell, Mrs. Hugh Ray, Mrs. Walter Burroughts and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Powell, Jr., attended the graduation of Ellie Powell from Southwestern University, Memphis." (no date).
My father, William Blackwell Myers, was born at Powell Plantation in 1904.
Hope this items are of some interest.
