A new article is now available on-line for anyone researching the families of DAVID COLLUM, WILLIAM THOMPSON and DEMPSEY WHITE. Each of these men married daughters of James Smith (d. about 1799) of Wilkes County, GA, and moved to Claiborne County, MS. The allied family of WILLIAM FOSTER moved from GA to Claiborne County, MS, by 1808. Two of Foster's daughters married sons of James Smith.

The article is entitled: "James Smith of Wilkes County, GA and Allied Families of Barron, Foster, White, Thompson, Chaffin and Collum" and can be accessed at:

There are sections on the Collum, Thompson and White families and an appendix with information about William Foster's move from GA to Claiborne County, MS.

DAVID COLLUM (early 1780s?-bef. 1820) married ELIZABETH SMITH (early 1780s-aft. 1837). David Collum resided in Claiborne / Warren Counties as early as 1806. In January 1813, David Collum enlisted as a private in the War of 1812 as part of the 1st Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers. Descendants of David Collum and wife Elizabeth Smith resided in GA (Jasper, Monroe, and Paulding Counties), AL (Chambers and Tallapoosa Counties), AR (Montgomery Co.), and MS (Kemper Co.).

WILLIAM THOMPSON (bef. 1765-1802/3?) married SARAH SMITH (bef. 1765-after 1810). William Thompson lived in Wilkes and Washington (?) Counties, GA, moving to what became Claiborne County, MS, in about 1798. A proposed list of their children is included.

DEMPSEY WHITE (bef. 1765-1823) married (1) MARY SMITH (1770s-1810/15). Dempsey White lived in Wilkes and Washington (?) Counties, GA, in the 1780s, moving to what became Claiborne County, MS, in the 1790s. A proposed list of children for Dempsey and Mary Smith White is given, with details provided on several of the children in an appendix. Dempsey White married (2) Hannah Fake in MS in about 1815. He died in Claiborne County, MS, in about 1823.

We welcome your questions, comments, critiques and any new information you can provide to expand our knowledge of these families.
