Here is an updated an expanded version of the tentative chronology for Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain, D.D. Incidentally, the "Port Gibson Herald & Correspondent" editorial concerning Dr. Chamberlain's murder, which is entitled "A Horrid Tragedy," is available on-line in the form of an image of the original newspaper piece, at the Library of Congress website, as a part of their "American Time Capsule" collection of historical broadsides.

(1794-1851)


1794: Born, Great Conewago, York Co., PA (5 Jan.)
1809: Sent to school in Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA
1812-14: Studied at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, where, before graduating, he decided to become a Presbyterian minister
1817: Graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary, NJ (a member of the school’s first graduating class); licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Carlisle (one published source claims he was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New Brunswick in that yr.)
1817-18: Missionary in the Southwest (Natchez, New Orleans, Mobile; landed in New Orleans, Jan. 1818)
1818: Married Rebecca Blaine, of Carlisle, PA (29 Jul.; notice published in “Adams Centinel,” Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA, 5 Aug.; Jeremiah identified as an inhabitant of “Bedford”)
1819: As one of father’s executors, advertised sale of his livestock, farming utensils, grain stocks, and household goods in an advertisement, “Adams Centinel,” Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA (24 Mar.)
1819-22: Pastor, Bedford Presbyterian Church, Bedford, PA (received invitation to assume the duties, summer 1818)
About 1819: Birth of son John
1820: Census, Bedford Co. PA
1820: Birth of daughter Susan Ann (16 Apr.)
1822: Birth of daughter Mary Blaine, Bedford, PA (18 Feb.)
1822-26: President, Centre College, Danville, KY (appointed, 15 Feb. 1822; sent letter of resignation to the Board of Trustees, 8 Aug. 1826; resignation accepted by Board, 9 Sep. 1826)
1823: With other subscribers, signed a letter to the Centre College trustees pledging a contribution for the purchase of books by the Centre College library (1 Feb.)
1823: Birth of daughter Ellen Marie Wheaton, KY
1825: Birth of daughter Martha Isabella, MS
1826: With other members of the Centre College faculty, sent a letter to the Board of Trustees recommending that A.B. degrees be awarded to Lewis Warner Green, Jno Pope Trotter, and Jas. Buchanan (6 Jul.)

1828: Moved to Rodney, MS; constructed Bethel Presbyterian Church, 15 mi. west of Port Gibson, MS (present structure built c1842)

1830-51: Founder and President, Oakland College (Presbyterian), Alcorn, Claiborne Co., MS (appointed president by the Presbytery of MS, LA, & AR, Apr. 1830; college opened, 14 May 1830; students moved to new building at Oakland site, Jan. 1831; first commencement, 1833; college closed its doors, 1861; the Chamberlain-Hunt Academy, a preparatory school for boys, was opened in Port Gibson, MS, 1879; Alcorn A. & M. College, which later became Alcorn State University, was founded at the Oakland site as the first land-grant college for African Americans, 1871)
