James "S" GORDON, father of Andrew Alexander Gordon

Hello,
In the family genealogy given to me, Andrew Alexander Gordon's (1839-1911) father is listed as James S. Gordon. I really want to know how people have figured out his middle initial is "S". I've found him in 1 Pontotoc county and 2 Calhoun county census' listed as James Gordon, Gartin, Gordan...no "S" mentioned. Interestingly, I've found a contemporary named James S. Gordon in neighboring Yalobusha County. He's listed there from 1840's- at least 1870. I'm wondering if someone mistakenly assumed this was our ancestor, OR is there some other record that shows his middle initial was "S". Does a family bible record exist or some family story that mentions his middle name? I know this seems nitpicky, but it really matters in having an accurate family history.
Thanks,
Stacy Ferris
