My father, Charles Shipp Nix, b. Big Creek in 1916 son of Walter Pleasant Nix, and Vashti Jones, was named for Dr. Shipp. Granddaddy Walter was born in Franklin County, Alabama in 1871 and Grandma Vashti was born in Yalabousha around 1875. Her mother was a Vaughn. Have the Nix geneology back to the 1420s, but know of the Jones and Vaughns only back to the 1840s...I say all that to say this..it was very rare for them to give names of living people and/or locals (there are plenty of George Washingtons, Thomas Jefferson and Jefferson Davises, etc.) I always wondered why Daddy had this name but the only answer I ever got was "your Grandparents admired him greatly." (Both had died when I was born and my father and I were estranged and his siblings had no information...)
