Mr. Bates, I went to our library in Bolivar Co. today and found the following information:
Only one BATES listed on 1860 census for Bolivar Co. As follows:
John N. Bates, 31, male, jailer, no real estate or property vaules, b. in Ohio. This info. was found on 1860 federal census for Bolivar Co. p. 1, dwelling #1. P.O. adress was Prentiss, MS. There was one listing for the BATTS family. It was:
P.O. Adress: Australia,Ms. Bolivar Co. 1860
Dwelling # 244 Family # 148 p. 22
Batts, James T. 28 male farmer $300 personal property value, no real estate value, b. Ms.
Mary 20 female, b. Tennessee
William H. 2 b. Ms.
There were no other families with names that could represent Bates name.
I checked 1850 Ms. census also. No Bates in Bolivar Co. at all nor in surrounding counties.
On the 1866 state census for Ms. I found these BATTs names-no Bates names listed for Bolivar Co.
p. 001 James T. Batts Bolivar Co. no township given
L.E. Batts Issaquena Co.(two counties directly south of Bolivar Co.) p. 025
M.E. Batts Issaquena Co. p. 025
Theodore Batts Issaquena Co. p. 025
Battey, B. Issaquena Co. p. 006
I don't know if this will help you but thought I'd send it anyway. If I can help further, let me know. Incidentally, if you find a connection to Issaquena Co., that just happens to be the county where I was born. Good luck.
A fellow searcher along the way, Gwen
