Hi Mildred.

I was unable to find the letter you mentioned at the usgenweb for Amite Co. I did find Benton Steele on the Jennifer Payne page and the 7th Miss. page and noted that he was in Co. K "Quitman Guards" of the 7th Miss. Inf. listed as "shot in the head totally blind" and died in 1912. Is that the correct Benton Steele?

I would love a copy of the letter since I am interested in all aspects of the lives of the men and women of the 7th Miss. We would add it to the "Immortal 7th" section.

I am especially interested in the letter since the 7th Miss. was not at Vicksburg in 1863. They were in Tennessee. This may indicate he was in a different unit after joining the 7th or was in a hospital as a result of his wounds.

Please send a copy of the text and anything else you have on Benton Steele.

Any other Steele's in the unit also, i.e. A. J. Steele and Sam Steele Co. K. My cousin Eileen Dowty of Oregon is related to the Steele family in Mississippi and would be interested in these men as well.
