Obit: Retired Judge James Porter Dean

Retired Judge James Porter Dean, 74, died April 19, 2008, at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. He served with the U.S. Army Security Agency during the Korean conflict. While a freshman at the University of Mississippi Law School, he served as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives from Alcorn County (1960-1964) and as a member of the Mississippi State Senate from the 23rd Senatorial district (1964-1968). Active in the practice of law since June 1961, he was municipal judge for the City of Corinth for more than 29 years. Until his death, he served as attorney for the Alcorn County Election Commission. In 1986 he was elected national commander of the American Legion. He traveled more than 500,000 miles; prepared and testified before numerous congressional committees; and toured and was a guest of the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Defense in many countries.

Services were at the First United Methodist Church with burial with military honors will be at Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. McPeters Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors included two daughters, Ellen D. Hinton (L. Lee Hinton Jr.) of Corinth and Sara D. Goretski (Lt.Col. Anthony "Tony" J. Goretski Jr.) of Montgomery, Ala.; four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Phillips Dean; his parents, Charles Porter and Violet Ellen Dean; two brothers, Charles Roland and Robert Neal Dean; and a sister-in-law, Mary Juanita Dean.
