Memphis, Tenn. - John Roy "Papa" Burnett, 85, died Feb. 14, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was born in Blue Mountain, Ala., to Buford and Minnie Burnett. He was retired from the U.S. Army. He served in various locations in Europe during World War II and earned the Bronze Star for heroic actions in January 1945. Later he was a member of the U.S. Army pistol team and broke several shooting records during the Korean War. His love, smile and sense of humor will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Services were Feb. 17 at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. Burial was at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Johnnie Mae Jenkins Burnett; one daughter, Jan Nielsen of Corinth; one grandson, David Strickland (Jennifer) of Corinth; two great-grandchildren, Fenley and Ben of Corinth; a stepson, Billy Terrell (Jeanie) of Greenville, S.C.; four stepgranddaughters; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
