JAMES COLE was born Abt. 1723 in Chester Co., PA, and died May 19, 1794 in Coles Creek Settlement, Natchez, MS. He was Baptized: April 30, 1732, Chester, PA. He married MARY RENTFROE Abt. 1754 in Bedford Co, VA, daughter of JAMES RENTFROE and ESTER VAN BIBBER. She was born 1735 in New Castle, New Castle, Delaware, and died 1810 in Cole's Creek, Natchez, MS m.
Mary Cole, the matriarch of the family in Natchez, MS dealt with the US. land office. According to First Settlers of the Mississippi Territories (FSMT) p 89 Mary Cole had dealings with the register of the Land Office west of Pearl River when she registered 120 acres on Coles Creek that were originally surveyed by the Spanish on Mar 30, 1798.
Rationale: Mary Rentfroe Cole moved to this territory before 1794 with her husband and children. Her Husband died in Coles, Creek, MS May 19, 1794.
The entry is dated Mar 30, 1798. You were required to be over 21 to receive a grant, and her daughter Mary was not yet 21 and in any case had already married to Joseph Stampley in 1787 so it would not have been listed as Mary Cole for her.
Historical interest: the same day that Mary was in the Land office, Newitt Vick (who later founded Vicksburg, MS) was there. He made transaction #168 and Mary's was # 171. Both transactions were for property on Coles Creek (though Vick was acting as an agent for John Hamberlin)
I have two possible ancestor lines for James:
JAMES3 COLE (STEPHEN2, STEPHEN1) OR James Cole (James Cole, Stephen1) both have been posted with regularity.
If you have information (proof) on the ancestry of this family, Or comments on the above information,I'd like to correspond. Sue Aycock
