Shandy is a British or Irish name, certainly not German. There seems to be some confusion about our ggrandfather, Alexander's middle name- Crook or Cook.I visited his grave outside Bonham, TX, where his marker reads "Rev. A.C. Moyer," and I'm told people called him Alex.He is buried with his wife, Nancy Jane Gray, and her family graves are nearby.I also found records that showed him and Charles serving in the Confederate Army, after John Lutherick was murdered by "bushwhackers." From what my mother told me about German words and "Pennsylvania Dutch" expressions used in the family, I think that A.C. and Charles probably spoke English most of the time.
There is no indication that Elias' family was Jewish. They were protestants who fled from the Rhineland to get away from the constant wars between France and Prussia/Germany.Sometimes this "Jewish" story gets started because people notice that there are a lot of Biblical given names (like Elias, Adam, Mathias, etc).
If Mary Henderson was Cherokee, she would not have been from New Jersey or Indiana. They were located in the Carolinas andGeorgia before they were relocated to Oklahoma.
I have some interesting information I would be happy to share with you.E-mail me davidcomposer at cox dot net.
