Tracing one family to 1640 Italy(?) is not necessarily tracing the whole MOTT line. Note that the first two known (to me) Adam Motts came to the colonies in 1635 and 1639. They lived in the Cambridge/Braintree England area. Both of their families go back at least 2 known generations in the same place. The Mark Mott family of Bocking England were there at least back to early/mid 1500. From what I've read but haven't verified, the MOTTs supposedly came to England "around" 1300s from France.
If you are implying that Mott, delaMotte, deMotte, Motta, and LaMott are probably all related I won't disagree with you.
WRT the coat of arms - "Coats" were bestowed upon individuals, not families, and were/are not transferable. "Crests" are handed down and derived by family members. The "coat" described in another post is much different from the one I saw the other day (the colors were sable/argent). It was alsodifferent again from one I saw in an article about the "Seat of the Motts" being at "Handsworth(?)" England. I'm not saying the info is correct, but is interesting that so many varieties of "coats" are popping up.
FYI - nothing to say you can't display the "coat" in your home and attach whatever legends you want to it. Just a reminder that there really is a "legal" (of sorts) protocol about them.
Interesting thread and discussion - thanks to both of you for bringing it up.
