Re: Ebenezer Mott
Richard Cochran 6/24/01
I am a descendant of Ebenezer Rhodes/Mary Starr through their son James Starr Rhodes.
Here is what I have in brief:
Ebenezer Rhodes son of Adam Rhodes and Abigail Mott
(So far anything further on Adam Rhodes is speculation; most sites have misinformation about him.
Adam RHODES born: about 1740 in (possibly, we have nothing to substantiate his birth place or date) Burlington Co., NJ; died: Sep 1810; court records filed Sep 1811 in Champaign Co., OH
Married: 30 SEP 1760 in Burlington Co., NJ (marriage record exists)
Note: Abigail and Adam were married “out of unity” of their Quaker faith and did not seem to raise their children as Quakers.
Abigail MOTT
Female
Note: probably named for her Aunt Abigail Mott who married Worden.
Born: after 1742 and before Jan 1744 in South Kingstown, Kings Co. (Washington, Co.), RI
Note: one source (Troy Caperton, descendant of Rhoda Rhodes) says Sarah Abigail Mott, born 18 Jul 1739 in Westerly, Kings Co., (Washington, Co.) RI
Died: before 1798 in George's Creek area of Westernport, Allegany Co. (Garrett Co.), MD
Residence: Of Adam and Abigail (Mott) Rhodes: George's Creek area of Westernport, Allegany Co., MD from about 1765 to 1808. [If birth dates and places below are correct, they moved between 1765 and 1767.] This is in the “narrow neck” area between Pennsylvania and (West) Virginia which is now in the towns of Barton and Westernport, just southwest of Cumberland and just north of Virginia border in the early 1800’s.
Residence: 1795 Westernport, Allegany Co. (Garrett Co.), MD
[From: Early Church Records of Burlington Co. “7th da, 12th mo, 1767. Abigail Rhodes granted certificate to Evesham Monthly Meeting. Not sure which Abigail this is!]
Father: Ebenezer MOTT born: about 1710/4 in (South) Kingstown, Kings Co. (Washington, Co.), RI; died: between 11 Aug 1770 and 03 Dec 1770 in Mount Holly/Northampton Township, Burlington Co., NJ
Mother (see below): Sarah COLLINS born: 18 JUL 1709 in Westerly, Kings Co. (Washington, Co.), RI (from Westerly Monthly Meeting Quaker records); died after 03 Dec 1770 in Northampton Township, Burlington Co., NJ
Note: There are some researchers+ who believe Abigail is the daughter of a first wife of Ebenezer, Elizabeth# (possibly Southwick*), but unless Troy Caperton’s information is correct, Abigail’s birth date is unknown. Ebenezer was a strong Quaker, born in Rhode Island. It is said he was married to an Elizabeth, perhaps Southwick, who died circa 1742. This is where the idea that Abigail is the daughter of Elizabeth comes from, but there is no proof. The first reference to him is in 1744 in Kingstown, RI. He remarried to Sarah Collins before 15 Mar 1744 when they are witnesses to Sarah’s brother’s John’s marriage. He was in Barnegat, New Jersey in 1745 and moved to South Kingstown before August 1745 with his wife, daughter and baby son John and by May 1746 was in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, moving that same year to Mount Holly in Northampton Township, Burlington, New Jersey where the rest of his family was born. There he became a Quaker elder and was a friend of John Woolman, the great Quaker preacher of the 18th century, who witnessed his Will in 1770. Woolman died later in England.
+ Both Fredin and Iris Grimmett [Iris is now deceased] of Sweet Home, Oregon, Abigail's descendant, believe that Ebenezer was married twice, his first wife, Elizabeth, being the mother of Abigail. It is possible that John, the oldest son, may have been Elizabeth's son as well, but it is more likely that his mother was Sarah COLLINS Mott. Elizabeth may have been a Southwick*; the Southwick’s having married into the Mott family in Rhode Island.
# The best evidence that Elizabeth was Abigail’s mother is that they name a daughter Elizabeth and that none of their daughters are named Sarah. Mary, the oldest daughter, was likely named for Adam’s mother.
*I can find no evidence of a Mott in RI who married a Southwick aside from the well-known Jacob Mott who married Cassandra Southwick. I can also find no Ebenezer Mott who married an Elizabeth.
Ebenezer MOTT
Born: about 1710/14 in (South) Kingstown, Kings Co. (now Washington, Co.), RI
Died: between 11 Aug 1770 and 03 Dec 1770 in Mount Holly/Northampton Township, Burlington Co., NJ
Will: 11 Aug 1770 Northampton Twp, Burlington Co., NJ
Probate: 03 DEC 1770 Burlington Co., NJ
Note: “From Rhode Island” before August 1745 "At a Monthly Meeting of friends ye 10th day of ye 8th mo 1745 Ebenezer Mott and his wife produced each of them certificate from South Kingstone [Kingstown] in Rhode Island."
Note: from “A history of Monmouth and Ocean Counties: embracing a genealogical record of Earliest Settlers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and their Descendants…” by Edwin Salter, “During the Revolution some of the Mott family in Monmouth were Quakers. A prominent member of that sect was Ebenezer Mott who settled at Barnegat about 1745.” [all in New Jersey]
Note: Ebenezer and Sarah were received on 7 mo. 1, 1746 by the Burlington meeting on a certificate dated 5 mo. 10, 1746, from the meeting at Little Egg Harbor
Note: In 1750 Ebenezer Mott was a witness to the will of Samuel Gaskill Jr. (1703-1750 in Burlington Co., NJ; son of Edward Gaskill and Hannah Endicott)
Will: The will of Ebenezer Mott, yeoman, of Northampton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, was dated August 11, 1770, and proved December 3, 1770, indicating that he died between those two dates. The will provided that his son Ebenezer Jr. was to have five pounds, his wife Sarah the use of his home, land and personal estate until her death, when the household goods would be divided among the six daughters, and the rest of the real and personal property would then go to his son John. John was doubtless the eldest son, as he inherited practically the entire estate, in accord with English law and custom.
Religion: He was Quaker Life Long in Burlington Co., NJ. Ebenezer was received in the Little Egg Harbor Quaker Meeting on May 10, 1746. (Note: Little Egg Harbor is now called Tuckerton) In 1746, Ebenezer and his wife Sarah were given certificates in the Burlington, New Jersey Meeting and lived in Mount Holly Township, Burlington Co., New Jersey (east of Philadelphia).
The six daughters of Ebenezer Mott were named in the will: Sarah Downs, Barsheba Jones, Martha Fenimore, Abigal Rodes [Abigail Rhodes], Ruth Barnes and Huldah Mott. John Woolman, the famous Quaker writer, was one of the witnesses to this will.
Father: Edward MOTT born on 11 May 1673 in Braintree, Norfolk Co., MA
Mother: Penelope NILES Tosh, widow of William Tosh, Jr., born about 1669 in Braintree, Norfolk Co., MA (daughter of John Niles and Abigail Ambrose)
Spouse: Sarah COLLINS b: 18 JUN 1709 in Westerly, Washington Co., RI (Westerly MM)
Married: before 15 Mar 1744 in Kings Co. (now Washington, Co.), RI
Note: Witness: 15 Mar 1744, South Kingstowne [Kingstown], RI. 4 Ebenezer and Sarah Mott were witnesses to the marriage of John Collins [Sarah’s brother], son of John and Susannah Collins of Charlestown, Kings County, RI, and Mehitabel Bowan.

Notes on Nathaniel Mott:
We do not know who Nathaniel's father is although there is much speculation.
We DO know that he is NOT the son of Adam Mott and Elizabeth Creel or his second wife Sarah.
He MAY be the son of Adam's brother John Mott (born 1603) and wife Hannah.
Their father was a John Mott.
The other idea is that he is the son of Nathaniel Mott and Elizabeth Saugard, but this is also speculation. It is said that this Nathaniel died in Braintree, Mass after "our" Nathaniel.
It is unlikely that Nathaniel was born in the American Colonies. He was probably born in England. But these are both suppositions unless someone can find a birth record for him. The date used is a christening date of a Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel Mott and Elizabeth Saugard of Cheshunt (frequently misspelled) Hertford, England
Here is what we DO know about him:

NATHANIEL MOTT OF SCITUATE AND HIS SONS
By G. Andrews Moriarty, Jr., A. M. of Newport, R. I.
NATHANIEL MOTT, one of the pioneers of Scituate, Mass., left a large and interesting family, which scattered into various parts of New England, some of them attaining eminence in various walks of life previous to the War of the Revolution; but, curiously enough, nothing about him except the meager and imperfect account to be found in Austin’s Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island and a brief and incomplete statement in Harris’s James Mott of Dutchess County, N. Y., and his Descendants, p. 7, has ever appeared in print. The present article will deal with Nathaniel Mott and his sons, showing where they settled, giving their children, and tracing a few of his more distinguished descendants.
1. NATHANIEL1 MOTT, of Scituate, Plymouth Colony, and Braintree, Mass., is first mentioned, as an inhabitant of Scituate, in the list of men able to bear arms in Plymouth Colony in 1643. In 1645 he was one of the eight Scituate men sent out in the expedition of Plymouth Colony against the Narragansett Indians, and he served thirteen days. He is next found in 1656 in the neighboring town of Braintree, where he married. The Middlesex court records mention him as living in Mr. Parker’s farm, 22 Dec. 1663. The births of his children are all recorded in the Braintree records, and the same records state that he was one of the four Braintree men killed by the Indians, 23 Feb, 1675/6, when they made their incursion into that town. Nathaniel Mott seems to have been a man of humble position, for he nowhere appears in the Suffolk land evidence, and he left no will. He married at Braintree, 25 Dec. 1656, HANNAH SHOOTER, widow of Peter of Scituate.
Children, born at Braintree:
i. NATHANIEL,2 B. 28 Dec. 1657; d. 13 Mar. 1660/1.

2. JOHN2 MOTT (Nathaniel 1), of New Shoreham, R. I., and Lyme, Conn., born at Braintree 19 Aug. 1659, removed to New Shoreham, or Block Island, with his brother Nathaniel about the year 1680. His name appears in the list of freemen there in 1684. He sold land at Block Island 19 Dec, 1689, and again 27 Mar. 1693, when he is described as “formerly of this Island, but now of Lyme, Connecticut.” This is all that has been gleaned concerning his career. He married, 16 Oct. 1683, MARCY TOSH, daughter of William and Jael (Sullivan) of Block Island. This William Tosh appears to have been the William MacIntosh who was among the Scotch prisoners shipped to New England by Cromwell in 1651, after the battles of Dunbar and Worcester, most of them were sold to the Lynn and Braintree Iron Works. Tosh or MacIntosh married at Braintree, 7 Dec. 1660, Jael Swilvan, who was evidently one of the ship-load of Irish captives sent to New England in 1654. When the Braintree men set out to settle Block Island, Tosh was among the first settlers, and became a man of prominence there.
Children:
i. ANNA, 3 b. at Block Island 9 Jan. 1684; d. young.

v. 7. MARCY, b. 1695.
3. NATHANIEL 2 MOTT (Nathaniel 1), of New Shoreham, R. I. born at Braintree 30 Aug. 1661, followed his father-in-law Nathaniel Winsley of Salisbury, Mass., to Block Island, where he was a freeman in 1684. He became one of the leading citizens of New Shoreham and a large land owner. In 1695 and for many subsequent years he was town clerk, from 1700 to 1710 he was deputy from the Island to Rhode Island General Assembly, and in 1710 he was lieutenant of the Block Island company. He married first, 29 Nov. 1682, HEPZIBAH WINSLEY, daughter of Nathaniel of Salisbury, Mass., and Block Island; and secondly, 23 Jan. 1693/4, SARAH TOSH or MACINTOSH, daughter of William and Jael (Sullivan) of Braintree and New Shoreham. Nathaniel Mott’s will is dated 14 Nov. 1717, and proved 12 Dec. 1717. He is the ancestor of all the numerous Motts of New Shoreham.

4. SAMUEL 2 MOTT (Nathaniel 1), of Lyme, Conn., born at Braintree 25 Jan. 1668/9, was at Lyme as early as 6 Apr. 1692. He resided in that part of Lyme known as Joshua-town. He was a yeoman of large landed property. His will, on file at New London, is dated 20 Aug. 1751, and was proved 16 Apr. 1753. He married first, at Lyme, 6 Apr. 1692, MARY _______; and secondly, MARGARET ________, who survived him.
Children by first wife:
i. MARY, 3 b. 10 Mar. 1692/3.
ii. SAMUEL, b. 1 Feb. 1693/4; d. bef. 12 June 1735.
iii. HANNAH, b. 11 Mar. 1696/7.

5. EDWARD 2 MOTT (Nathaniel 1), of New Shoreham, Kingstown, and Westerly, R. I., born at Braintree 11 May 1673, followed his brothers to Block Island, where he was freeman in 1696, and constable in 1700. He married, 9 Dec. 1695, PENELOPE TOSH, widow of William, Jr. His family is the most obscure of all the Mott families of this generation. In 1702 he was at Block Island, but he had removed to Kingstown by Mar. 1713, when he was sued by Capt. John Greenman of Kingstown for trespass (Newport County Court Files). He resided in that part of Kingstown which was set off to South Kingstown in 1723, and he is found there as late as 1727. He became a freeman of Westerly 1 May 1730. Administration of his estate was granted, 26 May 1735, to his widow Penelope, who was living as late as 29 Apr. 1751, when we find account of the town of Westerly with Nathan Burdick for going to “ye presten” after widow Mott’s goods. The births of his children appear nowhere in the vital records of the towns in which he lived, nor do the probate records of his estate furnish any complete list, but from certain deeds at Westerly, the record of the settlement of his estate, and various items in the town records, it can be shown he had the issue as below.
Children:
i. JOHN, 3 of Stonington and Westerly.
ii. HANNAH, m. 5 Oct. 173 JOHN MOTT of Lyme.
iii. SARAH, m. 16 July 1738 WILLIAM THORN of Westerly.
iv. SAMUEL, of Westerly, R. I. He was the father of the distinguished General Samuel Mott, b. at Westerly 31 Oct. 1736. The latter removed to Preston, Conn., where he became a very eminent citizen, a deputy, a magistrate, and an officer in the Revolutionary War, and d. at Preston 17 May 1813, “aged 78 years.”
v. A DAUGHTER, m. bef. 27 Jan. 1751/2 JOHN LEWIS.
vi. ? ABIGAIL [probably], m. 27 Jan. 1722/3 SAMUEL WORDEN of Kingstown.
vii. ? PATIENCE [probably], m. 8 May 1726 NICHOLAS HOLWAY of Kingstown.
[Note: Although Ebenezer, his last son is not mentioned in this list, there is evidence that Edward is his father.]
6. EBENEZER 2 MOTT (Nathaniel 1), OF Scituate, Mass., born at Braintree 16 Sept. 1675, is the only on of Nathaniel Mott’s sons who remained in the original home of the family in New England. He removed from Braintree to Scituate, where he married, 19 Feb. 1699/1700, GRACE VINALL. He died 1 Jan. 1736. He is the ancestor of all the Motts of Scituate and the adjoining towns.
Children:
i. EBENEZER, 3 b. 26 Sept. 1700.
ii. GRACE, b. 17 Aug. 1702.
iii. JOHN, b. 11 June 1707.
iv. MARY b. 24 Mar. 1712/13.
v. ELIZABETH, b. 17 July 1716.
vi. NATHANIEL, b. 23 June 1720.
7. MARCY 3 MOTT (John, 2 Nathaniel 1), born 1695 (gravestone), died 3 Apr. 1761. “Marcy Mott of New Shoreham” was married at Block Island, 1 July 1714, to CALEB LITTLEFIELD, JR., “of Kingstown.” She is clearly the daughter of John and Marcy (Tosh) Mott, for the wills of Nathaniel and Samuel Mott eliminate them from consideration as her father, while Ebenezer Mott of Scituate married too late to be her parent. She must therefore be the child of either Edward or John Mott. Now Edward Mott was living at Kingstown at the time when she was called of New Shoreham. We find no trace of any daughter Marcy for Edward and Penelope Mott, and the names Edward and Penelope nowhere occur among her descendants. On the other hand, the first son of Caleb and Marcy (Mott) Littlefield was named John, a new name in that branch of the Littlefield family.
Her son, John Littlefield, Esq., was a prominent man at New Shoreham, being warden, deputy, and ensign. He married Phoebe Ray, and was the father of Capt. William Littlefield of Newport, R. I., a distinguished Revolutionary officer and senior warden of Trinity Church there, and of Catherine Littlefield, the wife of Major-General Nathaniel Greene. William Littlefield, Jr., son of Capt. William, was for many years collector of the port of Newport.

CHAMPION GENEALOGY: CORRECTION. – I send the following correction of a statement in my Champion Genealogy, New Haven, 1891:
The first wife of Joshua Champion (7, p. 34) was Mary Mott, born at Lyme, Conn., 10 Mar. 1692/3, daughter of Samuel (not John) and Mary (Brockway). This is proved by the will of Samuel Mott, on file at New London, Conn., a copy of which was set to me by G. Andrews Moriarty, Jr., Esq., of Newport, R. I. The birth of this Mary Mott is given in Mr. Moriarty’s article on “Nathaniel Mott of Scituate and his Sons” (Register, vol. 67, p. 25).

(See New Eng. Hist. & Gen. Reg., Vol 67, pp.23-27.)
Note: Care must be taken not to confuse members of this family with the descendants of Adam Mott of Portsmouth, R. I., who also settled in Kingstown and Westerly, R. I.
From: James Mott of Dutchess County, N. Y….
Still another family of Mott, apparently not very nearly related to either of the preceding, was that of Nathaniel, who was an early settler at Scituate and Braintree, Mass. He married, 1656, Hannah, the widow of Peter Shooter, and had sons: John," born 1659; Nathaniel," born 1661; Samuel," born 1668-9; Edward," born 1673, and Ebenezer," born 1675. Of these John, Nathaniel and Edward settled on Block Island.
John" married Mercy or Maria Tosh, and two daughters were born to them there, but nothing appears of him on the records after 1688.
Nathaniel" married 1682, Hepzibah Winslow, and
a second wife, 1691-2, Sarah Tosh, by whom he had sons John,' born 1700; Nathaniel," born 1706, and Edward,' born 1709-10.
Samuel," was of Lyme, Conn., and had sons: Samuel,' born 1693-4; John,' born 1698; Experience,' born 1703-4, and Nathaniel,' born 1707.
Edward" married 1695, Penelope Tosh, and died intestate 1737 (either he or his nephew of the same name was sometime at Westerly, R. I.), leaving no record of issue.
Ebenezer," the youngest son of Nathaniel, married 1 700-1, Grace Vinal, had son John,' born 1707, who was the ancestor of the Motts of Boston. Male descendants of the Block Island men are still there. The line has been prolific and not a few moved to Connecticut and Long Island towns.
Hope this helps straighten out our Mott line to Abigail!
