Donald,
I checked and we have no Howards in our Mott database.Since I wrote that query in April 2000, we have found that our William Henry Edward Mott was born 9 May 1844-46 in either NYC or RI (he wasn't sure.)His father was born on Long Island, NY, his mother in RI.
According to his CW Pension Application "WHEM" enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 18 in while he was a student in Hartford, CT in 1863.His official residence before and after the war was in Providence, RI, until 1867 when he went to CA for a year, then 2 years traveling to Guam and China (merchant marine?) and then to Stockton, CA area by 1870 where he married a very young girl.
It looks like you will need to get back another 75 years before we know if our William is an uncle to your great-grandfather.I really wish we connected because after almost 2 years of looking for WHEM's parentage we are still stuck. What were the children's names used in the first two generations?
