Martha - I had never been to this forum and was so excited to see your entry - dated so long ago! But very helpful.
My grandmother was Flossie Motes, b.1905, Banks County GA.
She married Johnni E. Stewart b. 1902 in Taliaferro C. Ga. and they lived their lives out in Bulloch County as cotton and tobacco farmers.
Her father was Thomas Jefferson Motes, b. 1850 Banks Co.GA
He married Nancy F. Chambers b. 1862 in GA.
Flossie's grandad was John Thomas Motes, b. 1830 in GA
He married Nancy C Smith (details sketchy on her)
Thomas Motes is the g-granddad - he was born in South Carolina in 1786; d in Banks Co, GA in 1849; his wife was Lucy Bellamy b. 1797/98 in GA. (Her Dad was John Bellamy b. 1775 in VA; Mom was Lucy Goolsby b. 1773 in VA - his immediate antecedents are Webb which lead to Claiborne, Cleburne and William the Conquerer -not my original research but fairly well documented)
Back to Motes: Joseph Moates b. 1751 in VA/N.Carolina is her ggg-dad; he was married to Desiree D'Orsey (there may be a good revolutionary tale in there - the D'Orseys may have followed Lafayette over.... I have no details on Desiree.)
Joseph Motes' Dad and grandad were Jonathon II and I. so we are cousins!
Do you know Jonathon I's wife's surname; I have her only as Sarah, b. in England in 1699
I have that Jonathon I was born in 1709 in Maryland and died in 1763 in South Carolina - does that agree with your records.
Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have more to share. I will share what I have too on the distaff side. Thank you!
Apologies for any typos - I am a terrible proofer and worse typist!
