Mary Moses was the dau of James P. Moses b 1810 [N.C.?] and Yozzinah, latecomers to Johnson Co,Ark. Mary Moses was my father's grandmother. Because of my parents I was raised half Jewish. I was raised to choose my own religion as an adult. I am Jewish because I have chosen to be. I have no documentation that the Moses were Jewish, nor, any other branch of Dad's family. However,Dad said the Moses were Jewish. I was raised on Latkes. Not Irish potato cakes. Latkes. Dad made them and said that his mother and his grandmother Mary Moses made them. I make them myself using Dad's recipe which is a traditional Jewish recipe for Latkes. Also,Dad thought he was killed if his meat was not well done. He raved about even a drop of anything that he suspected to be a drop of blood no matter how close to well done it actually was. I do not eat fiflthy unclean scavengers as I grew up this way. Dad ate pork, I do not. You could not get Dad to eat catfish or any other shellfish because he said that they were fiflthy unclean scavengers. The only exceptions were in that he used to make shrimp cocktail on occasion, but always acted like a child sneaking candy. While Dad prepared the shrimp and before we ate it and while eating it; Dad would repeat "fiflthy unclean scavengers". It has not been difficult to give up shrimp! I noticed that Dad was ever dilligent in keeping some of this secret. Sometimes friends gave Dad freshly caught catfish. Dad always took them, then called another friend to come and get them leaving the person with the impression that Dad had caught the catfish and was sharing an overabundant catch. Dad actually told me that it was a secret that we did not eat catfish. I have an oyster story, but, will leave well enough alone! Dad was Boyd L. Murphy b 16 Sept 1924 Dover,Pope Co,Ark to Arlie McAlister Sp James Thomas Murphy. Dad could not stand for anyone to make bigoted remarks about Jews. However,he was afraid to openly admit that the Moses were Jewish. It was a secret! When doing this Moses genealogy I bear all this in mind. Maybe these Moses were Jewish, maybe they were not. I do not know. Maybe this info will help someone sometime. Maybe someone sometime can use this to go back to their ancesters roots;even if just to understand their culture better. Danke and Shalom!
