Moscrop/Moscrip/Moscript Delaware Co. NY

William Moscrip came to this country in 1793 from Roxburgh, Scotland, and settled in Delaware County, New York (perhaps stopping in Connecticut on the way) according to his naturalization papers from 1816. He had, apparently, a brother Robert who also lived in Delaware County, New York.

William married Elizabeth Unknown.
Their known children:

William
Robert
George
Nancy b. 1905

There are probably other children, including another daughter.

William died before the 1930 census, when Elizabeth is shown as head of the household. Daughter Nancy, from whom I am descended, married Archabald Lamont about 1827.

At the Delaware County rootsweb site the electronic version of Munsell's "History of Delaware County" notes that William was an
elder in the First Presbyterian church, and "Before 1830 William Moscript established a line of coaches for mail and passengers between Delhi and Liberty, Sullivan county, which with the two first-named routes
gave ample facilities."

A portion of a news article supplied by the Susquehanna County, Pa. Historical Society reads:

From the New Milford [Pennsylvania] Advertiser, 7 June 1892

"Way up on what is called Scotch Mountain, about six miles above Delhi, in Delaware County, N.Y., on St. Valentine's Day, 1805, a little girl first saw the light of day. She was a very superior baby -- so her parents thought. Her father was a Scotchman, Wm. Moscript by name, and her
mother was a Connecticut Yankee. They named the baby Nancy, after her grandmother
Moscript, who was Nancy Burns, sister of the Scotch poet."

Robert Burns did have a sister, Nancy or Agnes (Nancy is an alternative for Agnes) but there is no evidence she ever married a Moscrip or Moscrop.

William Moscrip, Jr. died in Delaware County about 1871.

His brother, Robert, moved to Saratoga Springs, NY.

These Moscrips/Moscripts were active in the Rent Wars in Delaware county in the 1830s and 1840s, several of them being indicted for murder.

Any connections?

Donna
