Anne-
I cannot answer your question about John Clifford Morse, although I may be able to provide some clues.
There was a Morse family that migrated from Massachusetts to Greenville, IL in the mid-to-late 1830s.That migration was led by three brothers: Stephen Morse, Kendall Parker Morse, and Francis Green (Frank) Morse. They were in the mercantile business, and apparently quite successful.
Stephen Morse (1808 - 1883)was the cofounder of Almira College (now Greenville College), named for his wife Almira Blanchard. They had no children, however, so he is not a candidate for ancestor of your John Clifford Morse.
Kendall Parker Morse (abt 1811 - 1867) had three children; one son died as a child, one daughter, Anna Maria, and another son, Albert Stephen Morse. To the best of my knowledge, Albert S. Morse did not have any sons, so he seems to be ruled out for your ancestor.[I descend from Kendall P. Morse and his daughter, Anna M. Morse. The 1838 townhouse of Kendall P. Morse is still standing, in fine condition, in Greenville.]
Francis Green Morse (abt 1821 - aft 1877) had a number of children, born from 1851 to 1860 and beyond.I do not have many details about those children, but one of those would appear to be a candidate for your ancestor. The names of those children, according to my records, were: Frank, Kendall, Harry, Stephen, Thomas, Bessie, (possibly others).[Of possible interest, Francis Green Morse was the 1860 Census Marshall for the region of Bond County, Illinois -- including Greenville -- where they lived. His name is at the top of the Census forms.]
