Yes, I still check for new info on Anthony van Salee and his purported father Jan Jansen van Harleem (aka Murat Reis the Younger). People are still arguing that Anthony could not be the son of Jan as Anthony was born in 1607. Given that Anthony claims on his marriage certificate that he was born in Cartegena (presumably Spain) this would mean that Jan was in Cartegena around 1606-1607 and had a tryst with a Moorish Muslim woman. It is said that Jan worked out of Algiers and this coast of Africa is visible from the coast of Spain. Conceivably Jan could have been in Cartegena. Supposedly at some time later he accepted the religion of Islam and at this time lived in Morocco where he was in good standing with the Sultan of Rabat. After all Jan was a pirate and I do not see him letting his ethnicity nor prior religion get in the way of him having his way with a Moorish woman of Cartegena. It is doubtful if it was a marriage but who knows. The Spanish Catholics forced these people out of Spain and many of them fled to Morocco. Was this woman the daughter of the Sultan? One wonders why the Sultan made Jan the Governor of the Castle of Oulaida (sp?). Had it been these Moors of Cartegena who fled to Morocco and Anthony perhaps then a young boy was raised there and thereby got the name "van Salee" meaning "from Sale"? There was a famine in Morocco and many people then left there and it appears that Anthony did also as a young adult, going to the Netherlands (the home of his father?) . This is all speculation but may not be too far fetched.
