Surname Mormon./Morman
Posted by: Dee Merris Lochala (ID *****0046) Date: September 26, 2007 at 11:04:19
  of 1823

My descendants were named Mormon/Morman but as far as I know were not members of the Mormon Faith. I believe they
were Quakers to the best of my knowledge. I'm not sure where our surname got started but there are Mormon/Morman/
Moorman,Mohrman, and Moreman from several different countries from Germany to Ireland to Great Britian and Scotland. The ancestor that I would like to find is a James Mormon that came over here by ship. His first wife died on the voyage or shortly afterward. Someone told me had had a grown family at that time and that the children
went North from N.Carolina or Virginia and James went South
into N.Carolina.S. Carolina, or Ga.. He supposedly married
an Indian (choctaw) woman by the name of Juawecer Spitlog prounounces (Wauweceer). Some of my ancestoral names are William Hillsman Mormon, James Franklin Mormon, Joe Dixon Mormon. I know we are related to the people who spell their names Morman who settled in Arkansas. Both of the spellings of the name migrated to Arkansas together. Some went to Desha county, some to Drew County, and some to Hamburg, Arkansas. ( don't know the county). Any help will be much appreciated. DeeMerris Mormon Lochala
