I noticed on your site that Moring (Surry County) is listed as a "stray" name derived from Moreland. John Moring, the first MORING in the New World, arrived in Isle of Wight Co. in the early 1650's from the County of Devon in England. (documented) He settled in Surry County and was granted a King's Grant of 600+ acres in the 1660's. (I have the records and photo copies of all Moring/Mooring grants from the LVA) John Moring's original land grant, N.W. of Wakefield, is known as Mooring, Virgina. Some of the surname variations of John Moring's descendants (recorded and used in and around early Surry and Isle of Wight) were Mooring, Morring, Mouring, Morrin, Moreing and Morning. Also, many Moring name variations began with migrations to NC and southward. Records indicate several Moring's from Surry began using Mooring after settling in NC. This was probably due to the record taker assuming two O's. I'm sure many throughout the South can be attributed to assumption and illiteracy as well. I have copies of a Surry Co. will listing the deceased ancestor as "Moring", his son as "Mooring" and his wife as "Mouring." Strange, but that's the way it was written. If only I had a time machine! I haven't come across Moreland in any of my research or "variations" as being a part of our family. Virtually every Moring/Mooring South of the Mason-Dixon Line is descended from John Moring. The Moring, Mouring and Mooring's in the N.E. US and Canada are late arriving cousins. (late being the 1750's etc.) They arrived in America north of Virgina. The numerous Moring's in Indiana (excluding myself and kids) appear to be of German descent; records point to early 20th century migration thru Ellis Island and settling in the mid-west. Paul M.
