Hi Frances,

Here are some sources for you:

Winifred Kouns, Daniel and Abigail's grandaughter, told Lyman Draper in a personal interview that Abigail told her that her mother's(Abigail's) "first husband was a British officer, Colonel Chambers, who died in America. Her mother then married Daniel Curry, a farmer."

Source: Lyman c. Draper, "Draper Mss." 22S (microfilm edition, 1980, reel 50) State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Copy provided by Rebecca Ebert, Archivist, Handley Library, Winchester, Virginia.

As futher evidence that Abigail's maiden name was Curry or Currie, David Allison was a local merchant in Frederick County with whom Daniel did business. In his old ledgers as early as June 25, 1763 it is recorded under Daniel Morgan's account "Abbie Currie (sic) for various sundries by her."

Source: Shenandoah Store Account Books, Ledgers A and B, and Shenandoah Day Book, VA State Library.

In his book, "Daniel Morgan, Revolutionary Rifleman", Don Higginbotham states that he has a transcript of the marriage bond between Daniel Morgan and Abigail Curry.

Source: Suit Papers, Packet 4; the author's typescript of the Morgan-Curry marriage bond was obtained through the courtesy of Mr Geroge F. Scheer, Chapel Hill, N.C.

In North Callahan's book, he states the following;
"All the known biographical accounts of Morgan have him marrying a Miss Abigail Bailey. But his marriage contract, dated March 30, 1773, and duly witnessed, shows the maiden name of his wife was Abigail Curry."

Source: "Daniel Morgan, Ranger of the Revolution", pg 37. North Callahan, 1961. Holt, Rinehart and Winston. New York.

I am sure if you contact the Winchester Historical Society, they would provide you with a copy of the Morgan-Curry marriage bond. If not, one of these two authors I mentioned above would also likely provide that to you so that you could get the DAR to correct their information. I believe Don Higginbotham still teaches at UNC.
Terry
