Mountain Democrat Placerville, California Wednesday, 4 Aug 2004 page A-7 Joseph Floyd Morgan Joseph Floyd Morgan, 82, after a long illness, passed away in Las Vegas on July 21,2004. Mr. Morgan was born on August 2,1921, in Decatur, Texas and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth, 4 sons, Jeffrey Morgan, of Lawrence, Kansas, Joel Morgan of Las Vegas, Nevada, James Morgan of Reno, Nevada, and Jon Morgan, of Pollock Pines, CA, five grandchildren and one great grand son. Through the ROTC program, Mr. Morgan earned his bachelor's degree In 1943 from the University of Oklahoma where he was champion of the tennis team and President of the campus Sigma Nu fraternity. Following graduation, Mr. Morgan was commissioned to the US Army's Artillery Officer's Candidate School and obtained his Aflight wings. Mr. Morgan married his wife Elizabeth at the US Army base in Columbia, South Carolina on October 16,1944 and then was sent to serve his Country in WWII. Captain Morgan, an artillery pilot for the US Army's 265th Field Artillery Battalion, served in Central Europe from December 1944 through April 1946 moving from Brittany, France through and into Munich, Germany. On April 25,1944, their Battalion was one of the first American military units to liberate the Dachau concentration camp outside Munich. Following the German surrender, Mr. Morgan was placed in charge of the Salzburg, Austria airport and was an enemy officer courier between Nuremberg and various parts of Russia during the post WWII war crime trials. Mr. Morgan again served as an Artillery pilot during the Korean War. Mr. Morgan worked for over 30 years as, the National Sales Manager for Carter's baby clothes, Lord Buxton, as a stockbroker for Cruttenden & Co. and finally as a small business owner. Mr. Morgan was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Zelzah, Shrine and Elks Club. Mr. Morgan had extensive United States heritage as descendants of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution; a cousin of Daniel Boone; was the great grandson of Robert Morgan, member of the 1913 Oklahoma Legislator; and the great, great, great, great, grandson of William Floyd, one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence.
