Hi Ralph,
I'm GUESSING that you lean toward the south....lol
Here's why: You're SO correct in your belief that nothing more happened on the field. This charge is so little-known, that folks WHIZ PAST the South Cavalry field where it took place - around 5:30 pm- well after Pickett's charge, near the Slyder farm. They are rushing to the ROund Tops, and only LEARN of this from the ONE Civil War information marker if they STOP. I did, and this is why I have been researching young Farnsworth and this charge for two years, writing a book. (I HAVE managed to get POSTCARDS in town, describing as much as I could sqeezon on there about E.F. AND the 'futile, SUICIDAL charge'
Brig. Gen.Elon Farnsworth -who had been promoted to Brig. Gen. WITH CUSTER in MD just FIVE DAYS EARLIER died with 14 of his men in the third of THREE futile charges into the skirmish line of the 1st Texas. Five units of AL infantry were behind high walls and fences. Kilpatrick INSISTED on making the charge, as Meade had messaged Pleasanton to 'create a disturbance' on the Confederate right. He was CONSIDERING an infantry charge in the CENTER of his lines - it NEVER WAS MADE (which is why this last action at Gettysburg is SO TRAGIC, and has been all but FORGOTTEN!! Each of the Brigade commanders felt that the ground was terrible, and they were proven right. First, PA cav. charged near Emmitsburg Road. Next, 1st WV charged in a rocky ravine, only to be driven back in chaos. SOme prisoners were taken. Lasty, E.F. flew out of the woods riding next to Gen Wells, leading 300 man of the 1st VT Cavalry. As one Georgia boy yelled, 'it wasn't a fight, it was a TURKEY SHOOT'. 'Many a VT saddle was emptied'. GOOGLE Elon J. Farnsworth and you'll learn more about this INCREDIBLE and POINTLESS (in the end) charge which killed a brave young hero with the same potential that Custer DID go on to achieve. (It was SUPPOSED to be Custer who charged, but he was still on the NE of town, near East Cavalry field; Kilpatrick was not AWARE of that when he ordered the charge. He did not KNOW that it would ONLY be made by Farnsworth's (new) Brigade, by itself. So, I stand by my words, as all the world will, I HOPE, in time. If I achieve NOTHING ELSE IN LIFE, it will be to bring this Union officer- the ONLY ONE OF GENERAL RANK TO BE KIA BEHIND ENEMY LINES. NEVER HONORED BY HIS COUNTRY. Instead, the CONFEDERATES 'Huzzahed' him for his bravery! I hope to change all that. And my search for 'H.H. Morgan' involves a cane I bought given to one 'E.J. Bonett', and says 'Where Farnsworth Fell; Gettysburg, July 3,1863."
So- if you can help me find H. H. Morgan, PLEASE DO! (I HAVE found one in the 3rd AL Engineers. If he was with either Bachman's or Reilly's BATTERIES that evening, and was CHARGED by the 1st VT, perhaps a CONFEDERATE Morgan and Bonett exchanged my cane! Hope this 1. clears up any confusion about the 'last action' at G'burg and 2. GETS E.FARNSWORTH OUT THERE TO EVERYONE WHO READS THIS! Next time you're on the battlefield, stop on S. COnfederate Ave., at the Wells monument (gorgeous bas-relief of the charge on the front). Read the 2 plaques just behind the 1st TX stone wall. We are STILL trying to pinpoint the EXACT PLACE where he fell. Thanks for writing. It just gives me MORE reason to TELL THE WORLD hwat happened that sultry sunset. Larissa
