[1824964.GED]

John Moretz, Sr born in Randolph Co. NC was a second generation American. He and his large family moved in 1812 to Catawba in Lincoln CO. NC where he operated a mill until 1839.

His first wife was Salome Moser who gave him 9 children.

From "The Hertiage of Watauga COunty, NC, Vol 1, 1984"
In a area of what is now Watauga County was a cabin where hunters stored there meat and hides known as Meat Camp. John Moretz came to this area with his family and seveal others in September 1839. One of the reasons given for their move was to start a Lutheran Congregation and communtiy. There was already an old mill there when he arrived which he bought from Samuel Cooper. The dam of the old mill was of logs so John Moretz put 60 men to work erecting a stone dam which still stands. This area in the lower Meat Camp came to be known as Moretz Mill. The mill engaged in grinding, carding and other work. One early morning in 1847 the mill burned in what was believed to be an act of arson. John Moretz rebuilt a mill which stood until after his death when his son Alfred tore down the structure and rebuilt it again.

He opened a post office on June 16, 1841 in his mill and was Post Master of Moretz Mill, NC. On October 15, 1910 the post office was transferred to Sands, NC.

John, Sr had been using the spelling Moretz for his name for several years and is believed to have pronounced it as John Mouris. In 1840, John Sr. purchased a second piece of land from George Bigham on Riddle Fork. The clerk who recorded the transaction entered his name as Mortz and this is believed to be the source of the shortened pronounced still used in the Meat Camp clan.

The 1860 Watauga County Meat Camp township Census lists John Moretz as a farmer (age71) with wife Catherine (age53). Children at home: Catherine (age 26), Alford (age20), Johnathan (age17), Mary (age15), Zechariah (age14), Joseph (age 13), Nancy (age12), Barbery (age10) and Martha (age 8).

The Moretz Family:       John Moretz came from Lincolnton long before the Civil War and settled on Meat Camp, seven miles from Boone, where he operated a large mill, which was burned but rebuilt. He prospered greatly and his desendants are numberous and inflential.

He opened a post office on June 16, 1841 in his mill and opened a Post Office at Moretz Mill, NC. A $400 bond was placed on the post office and signed by John Horton and H. W. Hardin.

Notes for JOHN MORETZ, SR.: (source - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncrandol/bits.pieces.html ) A copy of the marriage bond of John Moretz and Salome Moser gave the names as John Maurace and Sally Moser. The bond was was made by John Maurace and Daniel Moser and the signature was made by John Morris. Moretz, being German, appears to have been spelled several ways. John and Salome had 9 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters lived to adults. The listed children and dates are guesses arrived at from data found in "A History of Watauga County", Cousins by the Dozen, page 72, 1850 census, 1870 Watauga County census, Bald Mountain Township, nr. 23, estate of John Moretz, Sr. deceased dated 5 September, 1874, and "Life Sketches of Lutheran Ministers", page 144. Salome died and John married Catherina Hefner 2 November, 1826.
John and Catherina had 16 children, 8 boys and 8 girls, 7 each of which lived to adults. The list of their children was compiled from St. Peter's Lutheran Church records (first 7), "Cousins By the Dozen" page 62, 1850 census, and estate records of John Moretz, Sr. Four of John's daughters died of diphtheria during the Civil War within days of each other. John and Salome probably moved to Catawba County sometime between 1816 and 1820 in time to be counted in the Catawba 1820 census. One son and two daughters moved with John to Moretz's Mill in 1839 where he established the first Lutheran Church at Soda Hill in a small school near Moretz Mill. John was buried at Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery, now Bethany Cemetery, off highway 194 on a big hill in Meat Camp, Watauga County, NC.

John Moretz established the first Lutheran Church in the county, near Soda Hill, in the small Lookabill School House. This church was visited by Lutherna ministers from Lincoln, Iredell, and Catawba counties. These preached first in german and later in english. The Church house was not built until after the Civil War in 1866 or 1867. A new church replaced the first in about 1890. Another Lutheran church was built at the head of Meat Camp about 1900.
