There are numerous errors and unsupported claims in Owen Morefield's post.
Henry Morefield was born in Halifax Co, VA, where he appeared on the tax list 1812-1822 and in numerous other Halifax County court documents. There are numerous indications that he was the son of Wright and Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. He married Nancy Powell 14 mar 1814 in Halifax Co, Va.
Banister and Marstin were NOT slaves, but they did own slaves. Marstin appeared on the Halifax Co, VA tax list 1805-1814, after which his widow, Wilmoth "Willy" (nee Stokes) appeared on the tax list.Banister was likely the son of Marstin & Wilmoth and appeared on the tax list 1825-1848.Marstin was likely Henry Morefield's uncle.
Henry Morefield was on the 1820 census in Halifax Co, VA.In 1830 and 1840 he was enumerated in Stokes Co, NC.In 1850 his wife's name was given as Elizabeth; however, there is no proof that her maiden name was Powell. The Elizabeth Powell who married William T. Morefield in Halifax Co. in 1836 was NOT Elizabeth, wife of Henry. In 1850 William T. and Elizabeth (Powell) Moorefield were living in Pittsylania Co, VA at the same time that Henry and Elizabeth were living in Pulaski Co, KY.In fact, it is possible that Elizabeth was Nancy Elizabeth Powell. If it is the case that Henry married Elizabeth about 1835 or 1836, Henry and Nancy (Powell) had 8 children, not four:Mary J., daughter b. @1820, Rebecca, (William R.?), Martha A., James, John H., Robert, Thomas A. and Nancy R.Fountain L., Addison and Henry were born after 1840.
Henry's sons, James and John H,appear in the Pulaski, KY censuses in 1870 and 1880.Charles Henry does not appear in any census with Henry. There was a Henry age 3 in the 1850 census, but he was not living with Henry and Elizabeth in 1860.Some of Henry's sons began to use the spelling Mofield, but others retained the Morefield spelling.
There are no records that indicate thatEdward Morefield of Halifax Co, VAwas named Thomas Edward.Given that Halifax Co. was formed in 1752 and that Edward died there in 1782, it is not likely that he emigrated in 1661.The first known record naming an Edward Morefield was 1737 in Hanover co, VA.
