Is anyone researching CHRISTIAN in Edgefield District, South Carolina in the early 1800's. Were CHRISTIAN and CHRISTIE (various spellings) different surnames or was CHRISTIE the result of poor spellings by census
taker, etc.?
Two early setters of Edgefield District, South Carolina, were suppose to have been brothers, William Christian and Gideon Christian, Sr. from Virginia. William Christian b. 1767-75 m. Tabitha House b. 1770 Brunswick Co., Virginia. He died Edgefield District, South Carolina about 1807.
Gideon Christian, Sr. b. 16 August 1760 m. Sarah Morse/Morris b. 22 Sept. 1766. The previous information was sent to me by another rsearcher. Most of their descendents seem to have moved elsewhere by the 1850 Edgefield census or were women with different surnames.
I have Gideon Christian's will and estate papers from Edgefield Courthouse. His dau. Sarah m. and died in childbirth by 1826. He died before Sept. 16, 1821.
Trying to find out if the maiden name of one of my 2-greatgrandmothers was CHRISTIAN and who her parents were in early Edgefield District, South Carolina.
SARAH _?_(maybe CHRISTIAN) b. c. 1812-15 S. C. d. after February 25, 1883, probably in Edgefield District, South Carolina. She married about 1834 WILLIAM CARPENTER, son of Adam Carpenter and Milly/Matilda (maybe Sheffield), b. c. 1808 d. between 1860-80 in Edgefield District, South
Carolina. Adam Carpenter moved to Edgefield District, South Carolina, about 1803-4 from Moore County, North Carolina.
Children of William Carpenter and Sarah (maybe Christian) Carpenter were John(J. M) b. c. 1835 d. Sept. 15, 1915; Isham b. c. 1841-43; William, Jr. b. c. 1844 d. before Feb. 25, 1883; Ed/Edmund/Edward b. Dec. 25, 1842(census gives c. 1846) m.c.1884 Emma Frances Whitlock d. July 24, 1916,Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia; Frances A. b. c.1849 m. before 1882 _?_Murphy; Adam b. c. 1852 d. after Feb. 25, 1883.
The only record that I have found after over 30 years of research that indicates the maiden name of Sarah as being Christian is the death certificate of my great grandfather, Ed Carpenter, where my great grandmother Emma Frances Whitlock Carpenter gave the parents of her
deceased husband as William Carpenter and Sarah CHRISTIAN. Death certificates were kept by the City of Augusta before being required by the State of Georgia. Have much more documentation on Carpenters.

I am forwarding this posting to the CHRISTIAN surname list from the Library of Virginia List where I saw it posted and then responded to by someone else.
I would like to know if there is any connection between this CHRISTIAN family and the family of GIDEON CHRISTIAN, SR. who died in Edgefield Dist., S. C. with a will and estate records about 1822. {Don't want to stop to find the
exact date.} He arrived in South Carolina probably after the 1790 or 1800 census probably from Virginia according to one undocumented source.
The end of this forwarded Christian query lists a GIDEON CHRISTIAN b. Feb. 5, 1726/27 d. 1796 Lived at Squirrel Park. Most definitely not the same man, but is the same name and could very well be the same family.
One of my paternal 2-great grandmothers according to the 1916 death certificate of my great grandfather Carpenter was Sarah CHRISTIAN Carpenter b. c. 1810-15 in S. C. m. William Carpenter and d. probably in Edgefield County,
South Carolina, after c. Feb. 1883. Have ample documentation on descendents of Adam Carpenter who arrived in Edgefield District, S.C., about 1804 from Moore Co., North Carolina. However, death certificate information given by my great grandmother, Emma Frances Whitlock Carpenter in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, in 1916 is the only record I have found of the CHRISTIAN maiden name
or any other maiden name for Sarah.
Gideon Christian, Sr. d. c. 1822, had a daughter Sarah the right age, but she married and died in childbrith before c. 1825. Have been attempting to determine if my Sarah was a granddaughter through one of his sons, or even perhaps the daughter or granddaughter of his brother William. Estate records do not give many names with which to work. Census records are to late as she was married and had all her children before 1850.However, the later census does have the last name Christie. I have not been able to determine if this is a corruption of the name or a different family all together. Any assistance appreciated.

I am working on a family genealogy project for the CHRISTIAN family. Many of my ancestors were owned by a Christian family in Edgefield in the early 1800s. Gideon CHRISTIAN, Sr. was a possible owner. According to the 1860 U.S. census, Gideon must have left South Carolina in 1850 for Alabama. Around this time my relatives ended up in Midway, Alabama from either Tallapoosa or Talladega County in Alabama. Around, 1855, perhaps Gideon Christian, Jr. and his wife Carrie Christian took my great-great-great-grandmother LOTTIE CHRISTIAN, and her six of her seven boys, where taken to Upshur County, Texas where they farmed cotton. Jacob CHRISTIAN, Lottie's seventh child was kept in Midway where he served as his master's buggy driver in Midway. (Lewis Christian, probably was from Laurens Co. South Carolina). Any information on the Christian family of Edgefield would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to share information. Write: Lairold M. Street, 1337 Hamilton Street, Washington, D.C., N.W. 20011. Best wishes and happy hunting.

Bill:
I suspect your Ellen descends from one of the children of Gideon Christian and his wife, Sarah Morse.
I have the same names of Gideon and Sarah's children's you, but do not have information on all then. I know that Allen, Samuel and Mary married and settled in States other than SC.
I descend from Sarah (Morse) Christins's brother Willis Morse, who also settled in Edgefield Co. SC. The area where the Morses and the Christians is now present day Saluda Co. SC.
Keep me posted on any new depelopments

Looking for info on ancestors of Richard Smith Morgan, b 1824 in Knox, TN, d 1878 in/near Austin, TX. Married Susan Edla Sneed in 1850; was a Civil War surgeon, lived in LA a few years after the war before returning to Austin. I was just found out that our family records show that his parents were Joshua Morgan (b about 1793 in Virginia) and Mary Elizabeth Smith (b about 1703.

I found a Family Tree record of Joshua & Elizabeth, but it only listed the daughter Jemima b 1829. She married Elbert Allen in 1846; they lived in Honey Grove, Fannin, TX, and had many children.

Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

My Morgan was Dr. Richard Smith Morgan, b 1824 in Knoxville, married into the prominent Sneed family (Susan Edla Sneed) of Austin, TX in 1850 and had a boatload of children. Richard died in 1878. He had a sister named Jemima who married Elbert J Allen. Their parents were Joshua Morgan and Elizabeth Mary Smith. That's as far back as I was able to get on my Morgan side.

Hi, Claudia. I am the gr gr gr grand daughter of Jemima Morgan Allen. Also have another "cousin" on line who is descended from Jemima, and one who is descended from Martha Morgan. I believe Martha was the youngest. I did not have Richard in my info. Had him listed as Robert, based on some Fannin Co. info, with no further details.. I also did not have Mary Elizabeth's last name, so was glad to find your info. I can provide info on Jemima's line, but nothing further back. I haven't done any Morgan research to speak of. Maybe at some point, we can combine forces and come up with more information.

Hi Sherry: Just to clarify: Jemima Allen Morgan married James Alexander McConnell in Austin, TX in 1883. Their two children (who lived to adulthood) were George Richard McConnell and Maud McConnell. Are we still a match? If so, I am the 3rd gr grandchild of Jemima! George was my grandfather. I'm a little concerned because I do not have a Martha as a sibling to Jemima. There is a possibility that you are referring to Richard Smith Morgan's sister, Jemima Morgan (who married an Elbert Allen). (My Jemima's mother was Susan Edla Sneed of Austin, TX). So if we have a match anywhere, I would LOVE to share. I don't have a lot of info on the Morgan line. Please email direct . . . I have tons of info on the Sneed, Morgan and McConnell lines. dmeclaudia@yahoo.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I just found out my gr gr grandfather (Richard Smith Morgan, Civil War Surgeon)was a cousin to Colonel John H Morgan. Was this John Hunt Morgan a Confederate Colonel?

Thanks,

Cyntha Morgan was the wife of Joshua Morgan who came to Texas in 1838 and settled in Lamar county. He received a land grant from the Republic of Texas in 1841. His wife had died in 1840 and he then married Mrs. Byntha Bonnas in 1842. Her grave is north of Honey Grove near the Allens Chapel community on the Elbert J. Allen survey. About two months after Cyntha died, Elbert J. Allen married Joshua Morgan's daughter, Jemima.
Joshua joined the gold rush in 1849 and left for California. He was on a ship that sank off Cape Horn. Cyntha's tombstone is of native rock and well preserved.
