Opal Moore — 5/13, Lake Charles American Press & Jennings Daily News: MERRYVILLE — Opal Moore, 96, died Friday, May 9, 2003, in Wellspring Gardens in Converse, Texas. She was a native of Singer and was a member of the Christian Science Church. She lived most of her life in Merryville. She was a graduate of Merryville High School (class of 1925) and Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern State University.) Her master’s degree was from Louisiana State University. She was a teacher in Beauregard Parish for 36 years, and she taught one year at Hyatt, six years at Singer and 29 years at Merryville High. Mathematics was her primary subject. Miss Moore was a member of the Beauregard Parish Retired Teachers’ Association, the Louisiana Retired Teachers’ Association, the Merryville High School Alumni Association, the Merryville Historical Society, the Merryville Garden Club and the Merryville Cemetery Association. Also, she was a member of two national sororities for educators — Kappa Kappa Iota, which she helped organize in this area, and Delta Kappa Gamma, in which she was a lifetime member. Survivors include three first cousins, Inez C. Corley of Natchitoches, Marie C. Meadows of Merryville and Elsie Neilsen of Rogers, Ark. Her funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, in Myers-Colonial Funeral Home of DeRidder. Carlyn Fullington and Gaylyn Fullington will preside. Burial will be in Merryville Cemetery.
