Martha Moore & Moses Turner; Halifax Co., VA; Caswell & Person, NC; Wilson, TN

I am interested in Moses Turner and Martha Moore who married in Caswell County, North Carolina, in 1780. She was the daughter of Alexander Moore, and the bondsman was Robert Moore.

In June Court, 1778, in Caswell County, the inventory of the estate of an Alexander Moore was presented by Marian and Robert Moore, administrators. I haven’t seen a will or other records of this estate.

I suspect this Moses Turner was the son of William Turner of Halifax County, Virginia. That William Turner left his son Moses two hundred acres in his will of 1795, and I am not aware of another Moses Turner in the area that early.

In Halifax County, we find Moses Turner on the tax rolls from 1782 through 1804. He is not listed again through at least 1821. In 1800 and 1802, we find first one, then a second male tithable listed in addition to Moses; those will probably be sons reaching the age of 16. One of those sons was no longer with Moses in 1804, but there wasn't any entry for a new Turner in the lists that year.

I can’t find any record of Moses’ selling his Halifax land.

It may not be coincidence that a Moses Turner appeared on the tax list of Wilson County, Tennessee, in 1804. The Ancestry.com record doesn't give any more information about that. A Moses Turner was listed in Gallatin District of Sumner County, Tennessee, in the 1820 Census. He was 45 or older, as was the female in the household; there was also one male under ten. Note that Wilson County was formed from Sumner in 1799, not the reverse, so this change in the census location implies that Moses moved.

There are a few other records in Halifax County, VA, or Person County, NC, where Moses Turner acted as executor or witness, but they don’t provide any more information about him and Martha.

Can anyone tell me more about Moses and Martha Moore Turner? Information about their children and descendants would be welcome, but even proof that there were two Moses Turners involved here would help.
Walter Turner
