I purchased the subject studio portraits which reportedly were found at an antiques store in Grand Rapids, MI, with that dealer having acquired them from an estate sale--a collection from the family of Alden P. Miller (1860-1942) and his wife Mattie M. Johnston (1870-1943).
The earlier photo, bearing no studio mark, depicts a girl who appears to be about 5 years old. It is identified on the back:
"Carol Moore.
Cousin"
The second photo was taken by Ernest H. Price, Pacific Grove, CA. It is identified on the back:
"Carol E. Moore
15 years old
March" 1899"
Caroline "Carol" is listed in the 1900-1930 Census data for Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., CA. She was born 5 Mar 1885 in Hayward, CA, and died 24 Jan 1978 in Pacific Grove, CA. She was the daughter of Charles W. Moore, born Apr 1850 in WI, and Margaret A. Johnston, born Aug 1856 in MI. In 1880, the family lived in Susanville Township, Lassen Co., CA. The 1900 Census data shows Carol living with her then widowed mother and an older sibling, David C., born Dec 1876 in CA, the family residing at 624 Spruce Ave. The 1910 Census data shows her living with her mother still, residing at 562 Light House? Ave., and working as a pipe organist. The 1920 and 1930 Census data shows her married to George A. Turner, born about 1876 in Australia (immigrated in 1907), with the couple residing at 310 Forest Ave., next door to her mother, who resided at 308 Forest Ave. George was employed as a house carpenter. At the time of the 11 Apr 1930 enumeration, Carol had a daughter, M. Jean, born about 1926 in CA.
According to an obituary published 25 Jan 1978 in the Monterey Peninsula Herald newspaper, Carol joined the First United Methodist Church of Pacific Grove at the age of 10 and served as its organist for more than 50 years. She was survived by a daughter, Jean T. Williams of Thousand Oaks, CA, and 3 grandchildren--Elizabeth Pipes of Tarzana, CA, Evelyn Williams of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Helen Whitman of Encino, CA.
