Mooneys Pennsylvania
Hi!
The published Pennsylvania Archives can prove to be an interesting sources of information for MOONEYS who live in that state prior to about 1820.The Colonial Records (16 vols.) have been indexed.Much of the material in these volumes deals with administrative matters. However, I am passing along the following tidbits:
The Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania dealt with appeals for pardons for various crimes.
Volume 13, Minutes of the Supreme Exective Council, May 2, 1782, p. 275
"A petition from ELIZABETH MOONEY, convicted of larceny, praying remission of her fine was read; and thereupon,
Resolved:That the fine adjudged to be paid to the use oof the State by the said Elizabeth Mooney be remitted, on condition that she depart from the State forthwith, and not return again, on pain of being re-committed."
Volume 16, Minutes of the Executive Council
14 May, 1789, pp. 75-76
"Petitions from ELIZABETH MOONEY, Eleanor Armstrong and Catherine Hayes several convicted of larceny, and now confined in the workhouse of this city (Philadelphia) stating that they have complied with that part of the Judgment of the City Court by which they are sentenced to hard labor, and praying Council to remit the severally fines due to the Commonwealth imposed upon them by the said Court, were read, and an order was taken that the several fines adjudged to be paid to the use of the Commonwealth imposed upon ELIZABETH MOONEY, Eleanor Armstrong and Catherine Hayes, upon their being convicted as aforesaid, be remitted, according the prayer of their petitions.
Vol. XV, Minutes of the Supreme Executive Council, May 29, 1788, pp. 454.
"A trnascript of the record of JOHN MOONEY's conviction of the crime of buggery (? what's that) at a Court of Oyer and Terminer and Grand Jail Delivery, held at Lancaster on the 12th day of this months was received and read, by which it appears that the said John Mooney is sentenced by the said Court to be hanged by the neck untill he be dead.A petition from the said John Mooney, prahing a pardon of the said offence, accompanied by a recommendation from the Judges of said court and the jury, being also read and considred; thereupon,
Resolved:That the said John Mooney be pardoned; and a pardon, under the Great Seal was accordingly issued".
Vol. XV, Minutes of the Supreme Executive Council, April 10, 1787:
"A fine imposed upon Peter Mooney was ...remitted."
