My first husband was Tom Mooney and I knew his great grandfather was James who came here from Co. Down in the mid 1800s. Someone was kind enough to direct me to the Belfast paper (Telegraph?) and put in a free ad looking for his family. I had two small children when he died and was looking for their family. I have been writing to his family ever since. They came from Bryansford, near New Castle on the Irish Sea, about forty miles from Belfast.James' father Patrick Joseph Mooney was b. in 1809 and married to Mary Maginniss b. 1820 and both died in 1879 and are buried in Bryansford. Their children were Thomas, Mary Ann, James, Rose, Eliza, Bridget, Agnes and Patrick. Patrick's father John and mother Ann are both also buried in Bryansford. Both lived to be over 100 years old. I write to Mary Kane whose husband was related to these Mooneys. She lives in New Castle. I bet she could tell you where the place you're interested in is. She isn't a genealogist but she knows the area. [email protected] You could also ask her to call Thomas Walsh and see if he knows anything that might be helpful. He lives in Bryansford and knows much of the history though he isn't related to the Mooneys either. It's a very small village and his family has lived there for hundreds of years. Don't forget the Belfast Telegraph. Good luck.
