Hi all - I am descended from the Sevier Co. TN Moons, from William (b 1744 in PA) and his wife Sophie. For years we have been trying to determine when he arrived in TN and how he got there. There are several land records involving a William Moon in east TN in the late 1790s - early 1800s. This summer I corresponded with Karen Dale to try and pin down which of these belong to my William Moon. Karen and Marvin Johnson helped me to determine that there were two William Moons in the vicinity. Joseph Moon (son of John Moon and Mary Farmer) and his family moved from Randolph Co NC to Jefferson Co TN. There are land records from 1802 where William Moon is a witness on land purchases by both Joseph Moon and Daniel Moon. In the past, we have assumed this was our William, but Karen and Marvin have convinced me that it was more likely Joseph's son William. There are corresponding land deeds in 1807 where Daniel Moon sells his land to William Moon, witnessed by John Moon and Joseph Moon. This seems to be the time when Joseph Moon and family move to Ohio. I assume that William Moon sold his land at a later and continued on to Ohio, but I haven't researched that. Comparing the geography, these purchases are on "the branches of Tuckahe Creek", which is in the corner of Jefferson Co near Knox and Sevier Co. In contrast, our William had land surveyed in March 1807 on the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River in Sevier County. This land was granted to him in October 1808. Parts of this property stayed in my ancestor's family until it was deeded over by the heirs of William Mitchel Moon in 1852. So it seems that these were two William Moons in two different parts of East TN at the time. I now believe that they were cousins, based on my DNA test results (see my other post). However, Karen Dale pointed out that Joseph Moon and family were practicing Quakers in Jefferson Co. in 1801. Our William and his children were members or participants in the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church as early as 1807. I'm beginning to suspect that my William may not show up with his Bucks Co PA relatives because so many of those records are from Quaker Meetings. He may have been kicked out (or never joined), so his details may be recorded elsewhere. I have details about these records if anyone would like to see them!
