Karen:

You raise an interesting question and one that I have pondered for some time. The reason for my interest is that my great grandfather, Joshua Mooers, was also born in 1822 (apparently) and thus I have tried to trace various "J. Mooers" born that year. His parents are also "unknown."

I have never been able to determine John Edmund's parents. There are several John Mooers with birth dates around 1822. For example, John Mooers, the month of 13 children of Nathaniel Mooers and Rebecca Mitchell is listed as having been born in 1822. Although the Nathaniel Mooers family is reasonably well documented, I have never been able to find any more information about John. This family started in New Brunswick (presumably from the Petter Mooers family of pre-loyalists) and migrated to Maine in the 1830s or so. Most settled in the Milo, Maine area.

Another John born around 1822, and perhaps more likely the John you are looking for, was the son of James Mooers and Olive Hallett Taylor. This John was the sixth of 10 children, all born I believe in the Pittston, Maine area. This family, descendants of the immigrant Mooers "Edmund", is from the line of sea captains who settled on Nantucket, with the children and grandchildren spreading out to Maine and Hudson, New York primarily. This John had a younger brother "Gorham" born about two years after John. According to the Lang Family History, Gorham "removed to Oakland, California." He apparently had a daughter "Flora."

I note that John Edmond Mooers apparently had a brother Manader (Name was spelled Manander in 1900 census of Shasta County, Ca., but spelled Minander O. Mooers in 1880 census. Also, 1880 census showed both his parents, as well as himself, born in Maine, but 1900 census shows parents born in New Hampshire) but the date of birth, according to the census, would have been around 1839. I have never been able to find other references to him.

The other Johns with birth dates close to 1822 do not seem to fit John Edmund's demographics.

Perhaps this will give you some leads. If you find anything, I sure will be interested.

Dan Mooers
