I don't think I have posted this before but if I have; my apologies for the repeat. From The Moodie Book publ. 1906 (cited on here many times before), on pg. 12 in the footnotes was found the following. that in 1574 (Source cited was Fasti) an Alexander DICK had succeeded William Mudy(Mudie) in the Provestrie of Orkney. William held this office for about 3 years. Another interesting note that was made in these footnotes was that William Mudy/Mudie had succeeded Malcolm HALCRO in this position and that Malcolm was the older brother of Elizabeth HALCRO who married Gilbert MUDIE. There was another notation that mentioned that apparently in 1561 there was some sort of tensions between Wm. Mudie and Alexander Dick and the author noted that it was most likely over the succession to the Provostrie. Apparently in 1561 however neither men captured that position. I am guessing that Malcolm Halcro took his place in that position at that time and was followed by Mudie and then Alexander Dick. From this same book is also the genealogy of John MUDIE (poss. born around c1624), 1st Laird of Gilchorn, Co. Forfar, Scotland who married Margaret WATSON of Piersfield (not sure just yet where that is or was). This couple MIGHT have been married around c1648. They had children: David MUDIE, John MUDIE, Sir Thomas MUDIE of Kinnettles James MUDIE (b.c1657) and Margaret MUDIE (b.c1660) who married cousin Robert SPEID of Ardovie in c1678. (DATES are my own best guesses for this family) Footnotes on pg. 7 The MOODIE's were sufficiently under Highland influence to maintain an hereditary piper at Melsetter. There was apparently a place on the property noted as the "piper's park". The Genealogy of the previously mentioned Gilbert MUDIE is found on pg. 10 of same book~ __________ MUDIE of Caldwell (Gilbert's father)who lived in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland who was a cadet of the family of Mudie in Pitmudie, Forfarshire. The inference is that his wife was a daughter of Sir Gilbert KENNEDY of Dunure, Ayr (and probably for whom son Gilbert MUDIE was named). Children: Gilbert MUDIE of Caldwell William MUDIE, Bishop of Caithness in 1449. In 1455 he granted lands to his brother and on July 5, 1469 he endowed an altar in the Monastery of St. Anthony at Leith. Gilbert MUDIE of Caldwell (the son of unk. Mudie above). Gilbert received the grant of lands from his brother the Bishop William Mudie in 1455 with the consent of the Dean and Chapter "for the defence of his churches and churchland both in Caithness and Suthirland" (sic). Also of the lands in Dorrarie in the parish of Thurso, Atterwell in the parish of Bower 9, pennylands in the lordship of WICK, abd 20 shillinglands in the island of STroma, all in Caithness together with the Castles of SCRABSTER in Caithness and SKIBO in Sutherland and the lands surrounding the same for himself and his two legal hairs which grant was confirmed by King James III in 1478. Gilbert was also along with his brother, one of the benefactors of St. Anthony's Monastery in Leith. Gilbert MUDIE of Caldwell married Agnes CROWNAR who was said to be of Clan GUNN or to have had some connection with. They had sons - Gilbert MUDIE the heir (also noted as "of Dorrarie") and William MUDIE, Rector of Hoy and Walls [Orkney]. He appears as "Magister Willielmus Mudie" in Peterkins "REntals of Orkney" and possessed lands in Hoy and in the neighboring island of Graemsay in 1503. Gilbert MUDIE of Dorrarie heir to his father who inherited all the lands in Caithness and Sutherland mentioned above, had a son also named Gilbert MUDIE and one named William MUDIE. This William Mudie is noted as M.A. of the diocese of Orkney who was practising as a Notary Public in Perth and Dunblane from 1534 to 1547. It is thought he might be the ancestor of the Mudie's of Muir in Co. Perth, Scotland. Gilbert MUDIE son of Gilbert of Dorrarie, married before July 20, 1544 to Elizabeth HALCRO daughter of Andrew HALCRO in Orkney. (this couple already mentioned above) They had children: William MUDIE of Breckness and Melsetter Gilbert MUDIE who is named as brother of William Mudie of Breckness Thomas MUDIE named as brother of William Mudie of Breckness on Oct. 22, 1564 and again on Aug. 1, 1565. and a Daughter MUDIE first name not given. William MUDIE of Breckness near Stomness, in the mainland of Orkney and of Snellsetter Castle and Melsetter in Walls, Chamberlain of Orkney under Queen Mary, probably eldest son and heir of the preceeding with whom the pedigree ceases to be conjectural and the descent of the Melsetter family can be traced in a clear and unbroken line. On the 3rd of March 1563 William MUDIE granted a charter to his eldest son Adam MUDIE of his sundry lands in Walls including Melsetter. That conveyance was confirmed by a charter by Mary Queen of Scots in favor of the said Adam on March 10, 1564. Then it goes on to give the charter info which includes the mention of William's brother Thomas etc. It it under this info on pg. 12 where the details I mentioned at the beginning of this post includes the link between Malcolm HALCRO, William MUDY [Mudie] and Alexander DICK. There is also the mention of the Bishop REID in these footnotes. There are mentions of the BRUCE's, PATON's, GORDON's, INGLIS etc. On pg. 21 it mentions that in 1622 Francis MUDIE of Breckness son of Adame MUDIE was finally "infeft" in the lands of Melsetter by George GRAHAM, Bishop of Orkney and Francis was thereafter noted as "of Melsetter". Of Francis MUDIE's children (pg. 23) were Helen MUDIE who was born of his 1st wife in 1621 married Patrick GORDON of Cairston and Barbara MUDIE who married before 1622 to Patrick BALFOUR of GAirth and afterwards of Pharay a noted Royalist and follower of MONTROSE. They are mentioned in a sasine in 1622 and again in one on Oct. 31, 1654. [NOTE- Montrose who was born a GRAHAM...I don't know if it was this Montrose or not, but there was one who was noted as having started out being a follower of the Presbyterian efforts but then later noted as turning coat so to speak and following the Church of England effort. It was said that this Montrose toggled back and forth in his supposed show of loyalties. It was noted that depending upon in whose company he was, determined which "side of the fence" he was said to support at that time. He was later deserted by his orig. group of Presbyterian followers when Montrose turned towards the Church of England side, but when he was finally captured and prior to his being executed by order of the King, his last words were something to the effect that his heart had always been with the Presbyterian side. Who knows if that is true or not, but it might be. At any rate, I note this only because the MUDIE's/Moodie's of the Ayrshire and Orkney lines seem to have intermarried with the GRAHAM's who were most likely related to this Duke of Montrose. I also add this before givng the next genealogy...from Black's Scottish Surnames book he notes that the name of WATSON was linked with the surname of WATT. Having said that comes the following on pg. 26- Lt. Robert MOODIE (note the change in spelling of the last name) of Cursiter married Janet WATT and they had Thomas MOODIE bapt. at Walls [Orkney] Jan. 23, 1755, witnessed by Donald SMITH and John MOODIE. Henrietta MOODIE, Catherine MOODIE and Mary MOODIE who m. Charles Somerville of Edinburgh. On pg. 109 same book is the following entry~ David MUDIE 4th Laird of Gilchorn (son of John MUDIE and Margaret WATSON mentioned at the beginning of this post), was a Notary Public in Arbroath, Scotland. He served heir to his father on March 10, 1709 and on July 8th following, as "son of John Mudie of Gilchorne and grandson of David Mudie of Gilchorne", is infeft in certain lands. David MUDIE married Ann HUTCHESON daughter of _____ Hutcheson and Ann was said to be probably the sister of David HUTCHESON of Arbroath who married Isabel MUDIE. David and Ann had children: John MUDIE of Gilchorn, bapt. in Arbroath on Oct. 28, 1716 and witnessed by the Laird of Guthrie and David HUTCHESON. Elizabeth MUDIE baptised at Arbroath Nov. 29, 1725 and witnessed by David HUTCHESON and John Gallatie. On pg. 110 under James MUDIE of Pitmuies it says~ James MUDIE ancestor of the Pitmuies family is said in the family pedigree to have been the third son of DAvid MUDIE, the second of Gilchorn, but this author says it was far more likely that he was the James Mudie who was a younger son of John MUDIE the third of Gilchorn who was baptized at Lunan on March 1, 1701. At any rate, this James MUDIE married Helen FAIRWEATHER daughter of Thomas of Bryanton. James Mudie and Helen had a daughter Elizabeth MUDIE who married Alexander HUTCHINSON of Arbroath (note spelling of his last name in that it differs from the above spelling of Hutcheson). James MUDIE, Esq. (son of the above James and Helen) married at ARbroath on June 20, 1761 to Ann GRAHAM daug. of Alexander GRAHAM of Duntroon. There is much more to tell but I would also like to include briefly here that the surname of MAWLE (spelled that way which may have evolved into the spelling of MAUL), is associated with the MUDIE family of Dundee in the 1500's as was found the surname of CARMICHAEL. Both of these names have been found linked to our Ydna MOODY families who came to America. Page 76 of same book from the Donald MOODIE, Esq. line (that of the same line of John W. D. MOODIE of Orkney to Belleville, Ontario, CAN), one of his descendants Duncan Campbell FRancis MOODIE who was born in Cape Town, So. Africa in 1838, married Matilda HUNT in Adelaide, So. AUSTRALIA in 1874. There is mention of Sir Thomas MUDIE of Kinnettles in this book as well and he apparently was also a Covenanter and there is mention of him with Montrose's name but not as though he were a strict follower of his. Its hard to tell from the way in which this is written. Please also see my Posting #10338 from Sept. of this year as it gives details of the WARDLAW's in connection with these MUDIE's/Moodie's too and again how they interlock with the other surnamed family's which our Ydna cousin's lines have married into. Also keeping in mind those early records in the Ballykelly Presbyterian Church in Co. L'derry, Nor. Ireland of Alexander MUDIE (spelled that way) whose daughter Margaret was baptised in 1700 and of the Joseph MUDIE whose son Edward Mudie was being baptised (or vice versa...can't recall the exact and Correct order of this one), but Both of these men were noted as being "of Magilligan" which is precisely where our newest ydna Moody cousin's earliest known Moody ancestor lived as well...Alexander MOODY who married Priscilla DICK which shows that we have the MOODY and DICK families still connected in some way about 200 years later from those records of Orkney in the 1560's and 70's. Not to mention all of the other connections as well. There is NO Doubt in my mind whatsoever that These ARE our MUDIE/MOODIE family. From which branch we descend, I cannot tell, I can only go by our latest Moody cousin's notes that their Moody's came from Fifeshire, Scotland which is precisely where a large amount of MUDIE's were noted to be living that all link to the Arbroath, Orkney and Ayrshire MUDIE's from back to at least the 1400's. The only difficulty I see here is that in The Moodie Book it states as I noted above that they are not 100% certain of the pedigreed link between the Ayrshire MUDIE's and the Caithness/Thurso and Orkney MUDIE's, but by the Charters of land grants between the two and the intermarriages of the same families etc., the author seems to feel quite certain they are related, otherwise what would be the purpose of all of that land grants, sasines and documentation they do have where it shows and names these families? There were footnotes of Many illegitimate sons and daughters born to these Mudie's/Moodie's as well and I suspect this may have been happening with the female side of the family as well since we seem to have several different HaploTypes showing up in the surname of MOODIE and MUDIE who are noted to have descended from these family's but who do Not match to each other nor any other Moody's of any spelling so far. We however, our small group of about a dozen males now, All Match to each other with varying degrees of match and mismatch, but we are All of the Same HaploType at least...which is the Norse HaploType of I1-N. We All share the sequence of 8-9-8 in our numbers and at 455 we are All 8 at 454 we are All 11. So, I believe as I've said, this too is significant. How if ever this will be resolved, will at this stage only be proven by Ydna results. There just doesn't seem to be any interest in the ydna testing among those of the name MUDIE or MOODIE that would most likely solidly prove these interlinks between us. With good solid Genealogy however and the Ydna testing amongs these families, we could make a very good Genealogy and probably Correct a lot of the old information that has been floating around out there for generations that is most likely Incorrect! While the earlier author of The Moodie Book publ. in 1906 made a lot of good guess work based on documents and church records and charters he had in his possession since his mother was a Moodie, they Could be correct, but possibly Not entirely. The Mudie's of Angus book publ. in 1959 of which I Cannot find a copy of but would love to, if anyone has one they would be willing to photocopy or email to me, PLEASE leave a message here, this book having been written some 50 years later, makes some good Corrections to the previous book, but it also notes the links between the families and disputes those of others...particularly that of Harald Madadsson. Sooo, at this stage, I feel the only way we will ever be able to resolve and to finally Correct these two old genealogies, is by way of Ydna. This would be Very Beneficial to so many as well. We have the opportunity to correct history, but again, it is probably that same fear that keeps them having their dna tested as they don't want to find out that they Don't link to the Mudie's/Moodie's either. I hope this info will be helpful to those in the future generations. There is so much more to tell and a lot of it can be found on this board by doing a SEARCH in the box on the upper left side of the main Moody page here. Good Luck to those researching the Mudie/Moodie lines. Notify Administrator about this message?
