Hi Tom, Join the crowd of confused MOODY relatives...(laughs). The "Same-Names" area Overwhelming among some of the lineages I know and as I've said so many times before, the Only way it seems now to Properly separate them is via Ydna testing. We now have over 70 male MOODY men who have been Ydna tested in our Surname Project and the Results among them have been staggering to say the least. I for one never would have dreamed the results could be so vast, but they are. You did mention one name that caught my eye..."Smith KIRBY". Somewhere on this message board I have posted about a Kirby MOODY or Moody KIRBY. I am not sure which of his names is correctly his Last name and it might be that Both are correct, but an early Duplin Co., NC - James MOODY b.c1755 supposedly married a Sarah SMITH. This James MOODY was said to have been a son of a Kirby MOODY who was from the area of Brunswick Co., VA and supposedly born around c1726. However...I have my doubts on this and no one can seem to show Proven identity of this man other than his name appears on a deed as Kirby Moody. I think this man's name has been Reversed and his actual Full Name was John Moody KIRBY who was a son of a Richard KIRBY who was early on in VA as well. I have posted the details here about Richard KIRBY's son and the dates all seem to match up well etc. for Possibly being a "reversed" name as I've said. Your Smith KIRBY ~might~ be of that Richard KIRBY line as well which could lead back to that James MOODY of Duplin Co., NC that I have been trying (without success) to place for quite some time. Duplin Co., NC was a very large area for Scottish folks to settle as was Johnston Co., NC where another Thomas MOODY b.c1771 was said to have been born in Selma, Johnston Co., NC who MIGHT have been a son of a William MOODY and Mary McDONALD that fled to Shelburne, Nova Scotia...after the Rev. War I think and probably for the free or cheap lands that were being offered there. In Shelburne, Nova Scotia we pick up this Thomas MOODY b.c1771 again when he married in Dec. 1802 to Ann RHYLEY (Riley) daughter of Patrick and Catherine_____ RHYLEY (Riley). This family ~appears~ to link to my own Ydna family in Nova Scotia. Anyway...if you have more specific dates for your MOODY's perhaps we could find some more info that would be helpful to you. Caldwell Co., NC isn't all that far from Surry Co., NC where we were Known to have Ydna Moody cousins living at one time. They moved around a LOT making it hard to keep up with them too and to keep the branches sorted. Not trying to be pushy or anything, but if you have any living Male born known MOODY relatives that would be willing to take the very simple and private Ydna test, that may help you sort your family out once and for all. FTDNA is running a Sale right now too...see the most recent posting by Barbara B. on this board for more details if you are interested. One last thing and then I will end this...but I have found where Two Separate lines of MOODY's proven Not to be related via Ydna results, have intermarried which makes things even stickier when trying to sort out our lines in NC and TN etc. Good Luck to you.
