John B. Montgomery 1795-1880
Posted by: John Blair (ID *****7695) Date: November 23, 2009 at 08:08:03

I've long researched this family, and of course his children are a difficult issue though I have a lot on 4, possibly 5 or 6 of his children...but completed that the man found in Boone Co. Iowa is indeed the same man who married Matilda Jones...Here's some info, and I've talked in the past with others, but have lost that contact information. Anyone interested??? From Virginia to Indiana to Illinois to Iowa.....

1. JOHN B.1 MONTGOMERY was born Abt. 1795 in Virginia, and died 29 May 1880 in Boonesboro, Boone Co. Iowa. He married (1) MATILDA JONES 03 Nov 1814 in Madison Co. Ohio, daughter of PETER JONES and MARY BRANSON. She was born Abt. 1799 in North Carolina, and died Abt. 1843 in Illinois. He married (2) MARY HULL 25 Sep 1853 in Boone Co. Iowa. She was born Abt. 1818 in Ohio, and died 18 Mar 1902 in Boone Co. Iowa.

Notes for JOHN B. MONTGOMERY:
I now have John B. Montgomery's 1812 War records, (Pension No. 5342, dated Sept 28th, 1871) very good information, but nothing concerning his children. Gives places of enlistment, etc. Lists his first wife, Matilda Jones, and his 2nd wife. Gives his place of residence as Mahaska Co. Iowa in 1850 and the further details all confirmed. War record gives enlistment dates of 1812-1814 enlisting in Augusta Kentucky, in the 17th Kentucky reg. Militia. He served under Captian James Mead and John Good, and later under Captian Bradford, 19th regiment.
He slipped and fell in the Raisen River, (Michigan) damaging his right side.

COUNTY JUDGE OF BOONE CO. 1854-1857, and 1859-1863, A Methodist Preacher as well.
John B. Montgomery moved to Boone County in 1851, being the first Methodist
Episcopal minister to permanently locate in Boone County. In 1854 he was elected
county judge to fill a vacancy of one year, caused by the resignation of Samuel
B. McCall, who, as before stated, had been elected to the Legislature. Rev.
Montgomery was elected for a full term as county judge in 1855, reelected in
1859, and again in 1861, his final term expiring January 1, 1863. He continued
to reside in Boonesboro up to the time of his death, which occurred late in the
'70s.
