My girlfriend's surname is Rzanicanin (the z and the c both with the little 'v' accent above them). She comes from Krusevac, in Sumadija, where her family have lived since the 19th century (before the last war they lived in Globoder, a village just west of Krusevac).

They moved to Serbia in about 1840 from eastern Montenegro, from a village near Ivangrad called Rzanica (when they lived in Rzanica their name was Calic - 'v' accent on the first C and acute accent on the second one). They were Vasojevici (their slava is Archangel - 21 November).

When they first moved to Serbia they settled in a small village near Alexandrovac in Zupa which was named Rzanica after their home village in Montenegro. Later they moved to Globoder and one day when a census taker asked them their name they answered Rzanicanin - which means "man from Rzanica". Since then that has been their name.

Is anyone out there related to them?

Matt Tompkins, London
